NAHANT — Residents are asked to get their running shoes ready for the upcoming HOOMPA Nickel 5 Mile Road race on Sept. 6 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m., with proceeds from the event going to a notable cause.
The race, which has been a tradition for the town since its inception in 1978, is dedicated to former HOOMPA Nickel Road Race Director Bobbie-Jo Blair, a resident of town who left a lasting impact on whoever she encountered.
“Her love for her husband Brian and son Freddie, and the Town of Nahant, was endless. Her passion for running and helping the Nahant American Legion to re-launch the HOOMPA Nickel Road Race was infectious. She brought happiness and laughter everywhere she went. She is deeply missed by her family and friends but she will be a part of our lives forever,” the Town wrote in an online post.
Runners should expect a challenge that combines up-hill and down-hill runs throughout the five mile trek before the race concludes at the Nahant Life Saving Station.
There will be an awards ceremony and post-race party hosted at the American Legion at the Nahant Life Saving Station. Awards will go to the top finishers in each age group. The post-race party will begin immediately after the 5-mile race.
On race day, parking is only in the designated Lowlands Parking lot across the street from the Lifesaving Station. There is no on-street parking in Nahant.

Chair of the Select Board Rob Tibbo said he’s proud that the town is continuing the tradition, this time with a notable cause for donations.
“It’s a wonderful tradition, and I feel grateful for everyone that will be participating and raising money for a great cause,” Tibbo said.
“It’s an honor to be able to host the race and dedicate the race to her. We always try to promote service, and Bobbie-Jo was the classic example of someone who was always there, and we want to be there for her,” Organizer Bob Fields said.
