LYNN — Lynn is celebrating the 250th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps by hosting a Drill Exhibition & Pool Function at Manning Field on Sunday, Aug. 24 at 9 a.m.
The event will include demonstrations from the nationally recognized Lynn English High School JROTC team, the Quantico Marine Band, and the U.S. Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon. Potential recruits will also be able to work with a drill instructor for a pool function, which will test them mentally and physically in order to prepare them for the rigors of Marine Corps training.
The Drill Exhibition & Pool Function at Manning Field is a part of Boston’s Marine Week that takes place from Aug. 20-25. The goal for the event is to salute those from Lynn who have served in the Marine Corps for the past 250 years, and to encourage potential recruits.
Boston Marine Corps Recruiting Station Executive Officer Eddie Diaz was a key planner of the Marines’ 250th birthday event, strategizing inception and outreach.
“We want to honor the Marines who laid the pathway before us, and we want to inspire the next generation of future Marines to take on this calling and have this life transformation that the Marine Corps gives you,” Diaz said.
Born and raised in Lynn, Diaz said the most rewarding aspect of planning the Marine Cops celebration at Manning Field was being able to shine a positive light on the city.
“It’ll be great to bring this to Lynn. This city has done a lot for me, and it has a proud veteran’s group that resides here,” he said.
Lynn Mayor Jared Nicholson also discussed what the event means for Lynn residents who have served in the Marine Corps.
“To have a capstone event like this that is of regional importance take place in the city of Lynn is a great opportunity to celebrate the city’s connection to the Marines,” Nicholson said.
