LYNN — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has officially begun its project to replace the General Edwards Drawbridge’s center median barrier.
A center median work zone has been installed on North Shore Road (Route 1A) in Revere and Lynn across the General Edwards Drawbridge. The work zone will extend from approximately where Lynnway meets North Shore Road in Revere, across the General Edwards Drawbridge, to Hanson Street in Lynn.
The construction started on Aug. 17 and is expected to continue for the remainder of 2025. Construction will initially take place from 8:30 p.m.-5:00 a.m. from Sunday evening through Friday morning. During this time, intermittent temporary lane closures are expected to occur at North Shore Road (Route 1A) southbound, between Hanson Street in Lynn and the Lynnway ramps in Revere, crossing the General Edwards Drawbridge.
The project will eventually transition to a Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. schedule. The schedule is also weather dependent and subject to change. As of right now, no detours are anticipated.
This work zone will reduce North Shore Road (Route 1A) northbound to one lane while crossing the bridge, while Southbound traffic will remain two lanes. Based on recent traffic counts conducted by MassDOT, “The work zone setup is expected to have minimal impact on vehicular travel, with only slight delays anticipated during the afternoon peak hour.” However, drivers should use caution and reduce speeds during this time. Appropriate signage at the work zones has been placed to assist traffic flow.
Mayor Jared Nicholson emphasized the significance of Lynn drivers staying informed about the new General Edwards Drawbridge median barrier construction.
“We want to ensure that all residents are aware of the impacts as this necessary maintenance is taking place. Please stay up to date on all project details by visiting the MassDOT website,” he told The Daily Item.
