MARBLEHEAD – At approximately 2:51 a.m. Tuesday, the Marblehead Police Department responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash in the area of 352 Atlantic Ave., Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker and Marblehead Police Chief Dennis King confirmed.

Upon arrival, Marblehead Police and Fire units located a vehicle with extensive damage and a 13-year-old female who had suffered life-threatening injuries. She was pronounced deceased on scene.

A GoFundMe campaign has been created for the victim’s family to go toward funeral and memorial costs.

A second individual, a 16-year-old juvenile male believed to be the vehicle operator, was treated for his injuries and transported by ambulance to a local hospital. The juvenile male was arrested and charged with operating under the influence.

The crash remains under investigation by the Marblehead Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and State Police Crime Scene Services. Given that both parties involved are juveniles, no additional information will be available at this time.

Anyone with information related to this incident should contact Marblehead Police Department Detective Sergeant Sean Brady at 781-631-1212.

Superintendent John Robidoux shared a statement Tuesday following the news of the sudden loss of this 8th grade student.

“Her death is a devastating loss to our community,” Robidoux wrote. “As we mourn with one another, we will support our students, faculty and families with help from our administration and mental health teams.

“Grief counselors will be available at Veterans Middle School and Marblehead High School on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. As students head back to class next week, we will continue to offer grief counseling and support services for anyone in need.”

Robidoux wrote that he is extending his “heartfelt condolences to both families in this tragedy and request that their privacy be respected during this incredibly difficult time.”
