LYNN — Cultura Latina Dance Academy (CLDA) held its grand re-opening ceremony on Wednesday, Aug. 20.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony, which was hosted by Greater Lynn Chamber of Commerce, celebrated CLDA’s newly renovated space. The presentations included citations from Mayor Jared C. Nicholson’s office and Sen. Brendan Crighton’s office, along with a Merengue dance performance from students that took around a month to choreograph.
“Seeing what the CLDA team has built is so inspirational. It’s a great achievement for the team, and for the entire city. We are so proud of what CLDA does to preserve, project, and advance the culture,” Nicholson said at the event. “CLDA is always there for us when we’re looking to celebrate who we are as a community, and we’re excited for many amazing performances to come.”
CLDA Founder, CEO, and Artistic Director Yaya Rodriguez said the remodeling includes an additional room, a renovated waiting area, new floors, iPads for the classrooms, and colorful artwork changes on the walls.
“Cultura Latina Dance Academy provides social and emotional support through dance, and it is a true reflection of Lynn. We’ve been growing based on what the city needs from us, and these changes help make a safe space for the kids,” Rodriguez said.
Bachata dance instructor Socrates Trinidad said the additions such as new floors, mirrors, and updated air conditioning will make the classroom experience more comfortable for the students.
“The new materials and the artwork helps bring a feeling where you can forget about the world and just dance. You can take in the culture, the people, the great vibes, and just focus on your passion,” he said.
CLDA was established in 2011, and hosts classes for over 12 Latin dance styles for both youth and adults. Longtime dancer Sophia Diaz, 12, detailed her experience with the CLDA after performing at the ceremony.
“I love being here. It has taught me so much about the culture, and dance in general. I think these new renovations will help people feel calm and welcome,” she said.
