The Men’s Inner Club at Gannon Golf Club crowned new champions this past weekend as Dennis Thompson and Adam Carritte captured the Silver Classic Championship, one of the club’s most anticipated tournaments of the year.
The Silver Classic is a two-day event featuring two-man teams competing in a best-ball format with 85 percent handicap. Each year it brings a blend of friendly competition and championship pressure, and this year’s edition once again came down to the final holes on a sun-splashed Sunday afternoon.
Saturday’s opening round set the tone, as Ronny Young and Mike Bono stormed out of the gates with the best round of the day, a net 59. The pairing caught fire early, making the turn at 7-under par before finishing at 11-under overall, putting them in prime position heading into Day 2.
But Sunday belonged to Thompson and Carritte. Steady through the front nine, they began heating up after the turn and never looked back. With crisp approaches and timely putting, the duo carded another 11-under round, combining it with their 6-under performance from Saturday for a 17-under total of 123. The score was enough to separate themselves from a crowded leaderboard and secure the title.
For Carritte, the victory carried added meaning. It marked his second career Silver Classic title and his first since 2007, a return to the championship plaque nearly two decades later.
The field was full of late challengers. Kevin MacDonald and Tony Ragusa made a strong push on Sunday, finishing two shots back at 125 to claim second place. Meanwhile, two other pairings — Alex Fiste and Dan Volpe, along with Jeff Peras and Kevin Petrosino — tied for third with matching totals of 127, rounding out the top finishers.
As always, the atmosphere matched the play. Members lined the deck overlooking the 18th green as the final groups came through, adding an extra layer of excitement to a tournament that has become a summer staple at Gannon.
With the Silver Classic now wrapped up, the Men’s Inner Club and Tournament Committee will turn their attention to the last two majors of the season — the Gold Classic in mid-September and the Fall 4 Ball in October. Both promise more of the same competitive spirit and Sunday drama that continue to define the club’s championship calendar.
