Students lead rescue at Nahant beach

August 24, 2025 by Zach Laird

NAHANT — Students from both Nahant and Swampscott schools worked quickly to save a man in distress in the water on Short Beach on Saturday afternoon before the man was promptly transported to a hospital in the area for medical attention.

Police Chief Timothy Furlong and Fire Chief Austin Antrim reported on Saturday afternoon that the Police and Fire responded to a water incident at Nahant Short Beach.

Nahant Police and Fire responded to Nahant Short Beach for reports of an individual in distress in the water on Saturday at 3:22 p.m.

A preliminary investigation determined that an individual was riding what appeared to be a surfboard apparatus before being located in the water.

The individual was brought to shore by passersby who were identified as minors from both Swampscott and Nahant schools, who helped call 911 after getting the man to safety. An off-duty Cambridge Firefighter and an off-duty nurse began life-saving aid prior to the arrival of first responders.

Upon arrival, first responders took over life-saving care and transported the individual, a 57-year-old male from Nahant, to an area hospital with serious injuries.

Superintendent of Schools Rob Liebow said the minors stepped up “big time, and the world needs more of that.

“We’re all so proud of these young men, they really did a wonderful thing,” Liebow said.

Swampscott Superintendent of Schools Jason Calichman also commented on the minors’ brave actions.

“This is another example of students being leaders, and showing extreme bravery in ultimately saving a man’s life, we’re very proud,” Calichman said. “We hope he’s healthy and has a speedy recovery.”

The incident remains under investigation by Nahant Police. The Daily Item will update the article once more information on the individual’s health has been released.
