To the editor:
Yesterday was the state primary, and today we don’t have a choice. Although there are some republican pockets around the state, Massachusetts is well known as a one-party state. That makes the primary the actual election, that is, if candidates actually run. In far too many races, candidates run unopposed around the state, with the highest profile one this cycle being the Massachusetts Senate seat.
For many voters like myself, the Republican Party, the party of Trump, isn’t a real option. The Democrats have positioned themselves as the defenders of democracy, but what is democracy when we don’t have a choice? When you control the candidates, you control the election, and both parties know that. Even if you are an avid Ed Markey supporter, I’m not, so why don’t I get a choice? That is how democracy works. “Being primaried” has a negative connotation to politicians, but taken for what it literally means, it is more choice for voters. I’m a voter, not a politician, so I love it when politicians get “primaried”.
So, how about it, Mass Democrats – are you going to back up your rhetoric about democracy with action, or are you really just working for the incumbents?
