September 2, 2025 by Joey Barrett

In an early-season dandy, Lynnfield’s boys soccer team (1-0) took down Cape Ann League foe Newburyport, 2-1, on the road Tuesday.

“They outplayed us for most of the first half,” said Lynnfield coach Brent Munroe. “In the second half, we played a little better.”

Newburyport struck first to put the pressure on, but Rocca Scenna (penalty- and free-kick goals) potted a clutch pair for the Pioneers.

“Our goalie (Dino Gesamondo) and defense played very well,” Munroe said. “I thought Newburyport played very, very well. They’re a good team and we’re fortunate.”

Lynnfield returns to action in Thursday’s road game against Triton at 4 p.m.

BOYS SOCCER

St. John’s Prep 1
Milford 0

In a tough opener for St. John’s Prep (1-0), it took a second-half strike from senior captain Garrison Murphy to put the Eagles on top. Joe DeCesare dished out the all-important assist, while Matt Droggitis recorded a three-save shutout. Defender Ryan Levis and winger JJ Koulalis played strong games, according to Prep coach Dave Crowell.

GIRLS SOCCER

Newburyport 3
Lynnfield 0

Lynnfield (0-1) welcomed Newburyport to Pioneer Stadium for a season-opening showdown, but the hosts were blanked against their Cape Ann League opponent. Looking for more offense next time around, Lynnfield hosts Triton Thursday at 4 p.m. It’s the second of a four-game homestand to kick off the fall.

FIELD HOCKEY

St. Mary’s 5
Danvers 0

No home field, no problem for St. Mary’s (1-0), which cruised past Danvers behind a pair of goals from Alyssa Norden. Molly Verhoosky made six saves for the Falcons, who earned three offensive corners in the fourth quarter to make things interesting.

VOLLEYBALL

Lynn Tech 3
KIPP 0

Tech (1-0) took care of KIPP on enemy hardwood in set scores of 25-20, 25-19, and 25-13. Do-it-all Zahara Belizaire had 16 assists, eight aces, and four digs for the Tigers. She was followed by Azya Castro (10 kills), Katie Tartarini (5 aces, 2 kills), Mahlyna Williams (6 digs), Kayla Rivera (5 digs), Kaylee Deschamps (4 kills), and Lia Morales (4 digs, 3 kills).

Bishop Feehan 3
St. Mary’s 0

Gabi Lorenzini (15 kills, 4 aces, 8 digs) put on a show for the Spartans (0-1), but it wasn’t enough to take down the Shamrocks Tuesday evening.

Lynnfield 3
Ipswich 0

In dominant set scores of 25-7, 25-9, and 25-11, Lynnfield cruised in its opener. Audrey Manning (18 kills, 14 assists, 4 blocks), Alexia Vaquerano (10 kills, 11 digs, 5 aces), and sophomore Carina DeLeo (18 assists, 8 aces, 6 digs) got the job done for the Pioneers.

GOLF

Somerville 41
Lynn English 31

Despite a win from Jacoby Comeau and ties from Riley Driscoll and Christopher Boyd, it wasn’t enough for the Bulldogs (0-1) at Woburn Country Club. English looks to bounce back in Thursday’s match against Salem.

St. Mary’s 162
Arlington Catholic 126

The Spartans (1-2) entered the win column with a strong performance at Gannon Municipal Golf Course. Leading the charge were Bobby MaCaulay (32 points), Micah Hashikawa (28), Stephen Nason (27), Lucas Downy (20), Luke Malcuit (20), Dalton Diozzi (18), and Ryan Gil (17).

Marblehead 38.5
Gloucester 33.5

Behind wins from Will Macrina, Joy Meshulam, Dylan Whitman, and Bowden Laramie, as well as a tie from medalist Tyler Forbes (37), the Magicians upped their record to 2-1 ahead of Wednesday’s matchup against Peabody.
