Roundup: St. Mary’s gets the job done against Lynn Tech

In the first round of the Lynn city soccer tournament, the St. Mary’s boys edged Lynn Tech, 2-1, at Manning Field Wednesday. Ryan Buser and Jade Abila tucked goals for the Spartans.

St. Mary’s will face Lynn English in Saturday’s championship game at Manning Field, beginning at 2:15 p.m. Tech takes on Lynn Classical in the consolation game at 10:45 a.m.

BOYS SOCCER

Danvers 1
Peabody 0

In an early-season blanking on the scoreboard, Peabody coach Stan McKeen pointed to “the inability of being able to generate offense.” The visiting Tanners (0-1) received strong play from Julio Cambui, Jason Decost, Jayden Lopez, Marshall Simpson, and Thad Broughton.

Swampscott 3
Saugus 1

Nico Croft, George Spellios, and Milad Sassin found the back of the net for Swampscott, which raced to a two-goal win against the Sachems. Art Mamida recorded an assist for the Big Blue.

Winthrop 4
Salem 2

Noah Bayersdorfer, Nikolai Qose, and Fabiano Rodrigues were Winthrop’s goal-scorers as the Vikings took down the Witches. Winthrop’s Jackson Faber and David Restrepo also played well in a back-and-forth showdown.

Marblehead 4
Masconomet 3

In a back-and-forth shootout at Piper Field, Marblehead edged Masconomet thanks to goals from Mark Vinokur, David Magen, Miles Fontela-Tuttle, and Adam Laughlin. Julian Poitevin, Bubacarr Jallow, and Fontela-Tuttle delivered assists, while goalie Matias Watts-Cruz made key stops.

GIRLS SOCCER

Swampscott 2
Saugus 0

Behind pivotal goals from Jane Raymond and Chloe Rogers, the Big Blue started the season strong against a Northeastern Conference foe. Lyla and Chloe Rogers dished out assists, while Eve Byrne was perfect between the pipes.

“We had a solid performance from Greta Siefken, Fiona Keaney, and Jenny Sanchez as well,” said Swampscott coach Jaymie Caponigro.

Peabody 1

Despite a goal from Peabody’s Maggie Jolin via free kick, the Tanners met their match on home turf. Lila Doucette paced the Falcons with four goals, while Addi McCarty and freshman Rylee Sullivan each distributed a pair of assists.

Marblehead 1
Masconomet 0

Marblehead’s Courtney Hitscherich scored an unassisted goal with seven minutes remaining in the first half, and her visiting Magicians took down Masconomet to make history.

“This was a total team effort. I’m incredibly proud of the girls,” said Marblehead coach Lisa Wales. “Masco is always tough. This is the first time in program history that we have beaten Masco since they joined the NEC.”

Hailey Gilmore recorded five saves for the Magicians. Defensively, Ainsley McDonald, Ashley Mortensen, and Sydney Ball were “outstanding,” according to Wales.

“Liv Carlson also had a terrific game; Callie Gilmore and Lucy McDonald worked tirelessly in the midfield.”

VOLLEYBALL

Peabody 3
Danvers 1

In set scores of 25-12, 14-25, 25-19, and 25-14, the Tanners (1-0) started strong on the hardwood. Lizzy Bettencourt recorded 25 kills and Sydney Lynch had 33 digs, while Yorna Demiri and MacKenzie Landry each dished out 14 assists.

Marblehead 3
Masconomet 0

Marblehead (1-0) blanked the Chieftains in set scores of 25-18, 25-21, and 25-12. Sammy Walker (7 kills) and Mari Modrzynska (6) led Marblehead’s offensive attack, as the team posted 25 kills with just two errors. On the defensive side, Sydney Faris anchored serve receive, while adding eight digs. Greta Sachs picked up three blocks and setter Eva Burke distributed the offense with 18 assists.

Swampscott 3
Bishop Fenwick 1

In set scores of 20-25, 25-17, 25-23, and 25-22, Swampscott executed a comeback against the Crusaders. Lauren Paul and Lila Paster (2 blocks) led the Big Blue with seven kills apiece. Marta Sirota delivered a strong 11-dig, three-ace showing.

GOLF

St. John’s Prep 42.5
Gloucester 29.5

In eight-on-eight match play, with two alternates, St. John’s Prep (2-0) remained perfect with a win at Bass Rocks Golf Club. The Eagles were led by Logan Daigle (43), AJ Bodnar (38), Seamus O’Holleran (37), Grady O’Gannon (37), and Jack Moriarty (36).

Swampscott 56
Saugus 16

The Big Blue (1-1) shot their way to win No. 1. Tyler Ostroff (38) and Cole Manning (38) were low scorers, while Mike Collins (39) and Luke McGonagle (39) also played well at The Meadow at Peabody.

Marblehead 61.5
Peabody 10.5

Marblehead defeated Peabody at Tedesco Country Club and upped its record to 3-1 on the young season. Match winners were Tyler Forbes, Max King, Greyson Leventhal, Will Macrina, Joy Meshulam, Colby Moore, Dylan Whitman, and Zac Plum. Macrina and Moore were medalists with scores of 36.

Despite a loss in the No. 1 spot, Tristan Joyce played well for the Tanners.

“He will always get the best the other team has,” said Peabody coach Peter Cronan. “He’s a competitor and will be in every match – win or lose.”

CROSS COUNTRY

The Peabody boys and girls opened with home victories against Winthrop. Osama Mishal, Aiden Trainor, Luke Murphy, and George Logan led the Tanner boys, while Maya Sutton, Lily Murphy, Marley Lambert, and Olivia Del Valle anchored the girls.

In other Northeastern Conference action, the Swampscott boys took down Marblehead, despite Henrik Adams winning the 2.97-mile race in 17:05 for the Magicians. On the girls’ side, Marblehead defeated Swampscott with Marri O’Connell picking up where she left off from previous years. She clocked a stellar 18:58 time, followed by Swampscott’s Annabelle Averett (19:39).
