LYNN — If you walked into Connery Rink Thursday evening, you would’ve witnessed lots of smiles, 65 boxes of pizza, and good-old-fashioned hockey talk.
Lynn Youth Hockey, once again commanded by President and Treasurer Brian Boisson, hosted Welcome Back Night, featuring 140 players.
“The energy in the program and seeing how happy people are – that’s the most rewarding part of it,” said Boisson, who also helms the co-op Lynn Jets during winters.
Ten years ago, first-year President Boisson established Welcome Back Nights. He partnered with local businesses to donate and sponsor youth teams, which allowed him to purchase new uniforms for all teams.
“Every year, the kids always had jerseys that were hand-me-downs . . . they got turned in at the end of each year,” he said, “and what little kid doesn’t want to see his name with his favorite number on his jersey?”
Teams were called out to center-ice Thursday, with each player receiving a jersey and having photos taken.
“Just to see the faces of the kids, and the fans and parents watching along . . . it’s incredible to see,” Boisson said.
Hour No. 2 included a pizza party, courtesy of Nickey’s Pizza in Lynn, and family skate. All family members were invited to skate.
“That’s our slogan for the program: one team, one family,” Boisson said. “It doesn’t matter what team you’re on, what color your skin is, or where you reside, we’re all in it as a family.”
The 12-week-long Learn to Skate program begins Saturday, Sept. 27. Director Kevin Clougherty awaits his 15th season.
“That guy has taught every player on a Lynn Youth Hockey team – even kids who graduated five or six years ago were taught to skate by Kevin Clougherty,” Boisson said. “He’s a huge piece and foundation to this program.”
