This one was just too close for comfort.

With heavy contributors on both sides, the Bishop Fenwick and Marblehead field hockey teams fought to a 5-5 tie at Piper Field in Marblehead.

Fenwick goal-scorers were Alex Kohalmi, Sophia Cooke (2), and Bella McCormack (2, including a stroke). Shea Mason delivered an assist and Sarah Bannister made 10 saves.

“Bailey Chalmers played well on defense and Neive Bachman had a good game in the midfield,” said Fenwick coach Marybeth Mahoney.

On the Marblehead side of things, Sadie Beane scored a pair of goals, while Emma Ryan netted her first at the varsity level. Carolyn Black and Chloe Rowland also scored.

“Our offense did a great job of putting pressure on Bishop Fenwick,” said Marblehead coach Ali Carey. “In practice, we’ve been working on taking advantage of scoring opportunities and trusting our offense to set up for rebounds – and today, that really paid off for us.”

GIRLS SOCCER

Lynn Tech 6
Innovation Academy Charter School 0

Lynn Tech’s Angie Niz ripped a hat-trick in her team’s dominant win against Innovation. Stephanie Mendez and Cindy DeLeon also found the scoreboard, with both of DeLeon’s coming in the second half.

Tech coach JD Perry highlighted the play of Gilary Cifuentes, who demonstrated “stellar defensive work” as a field general.

Lynnfield 8
Triton 1

Never in doubt, Lynnfield rolled over Triton at Pioneer Stadium. The Pioneers were led by Ava Damiani (2 goals, 2 assists), Kaylee Barrett (2 goals, 3 assists), Bella Clancy (2 goals), Giada Antidormi (goal, assist), and Hannah Doherty (goal).

VOLLEYBALL

Lynn Tech 3
Lynn English 0

The host Tigers (2-0) advanced to the city championship match with a victory against the Bulldogs. Tech, once again helmed by coach Kaitlyn Wechsler, has yet to drop a set through two matches.

Zahara Belizaire had 14 assists and four aces. She was followed by Mahlyna Williams (7 digs, 6 aces), Lia Morales (5 digs, 3 kills, 2 aces), Katie Tartarini (4 kills, 3 digs, 2 aces), Kaylee Deschamps (4 kills, 3 digs), Azya Castro (3 kills, 3 digs), Kayla Rivera (5 digs), and Niya Bingham (3 kills).

Lynn Classical 3
St. Mary’s 0

In set scores of 25-14, 25-15, and 25-21, Classical took down St. Mary’s and advanced to the city championship match against Lynn Tech. Leading the Rams were Stacia Wonoski (11 assists, 2 aces, 5 digs), Brooke Braswell (5 kills, 12 digs, 3 blocks, 2 aces), Meredith Kennedy (5 kills, block), and Jada Tejada (5 kills 6 digs, ace).

“Tonight was a really nice win for us,” said Classical coach Chris LeBlanc. “After the way we came out in the season-opener Tuesday, I had no idea how we would play tonight. I felt like we came out strong in the first set, served well, passed well, and attacked well.”

GOLF

Lynn English 37.5
Salem 34.5

Johan Plaza and Ben Sang secured their first varsity wins, as the Bulldogs took care of business at Olde Salem Greens Golf Course. Riley Driscoll and Jacoby Comeau were also victorious, while Christopher Boyd and Joseph Plourde settled for ties.

Medford 54
Lynn Classical 18

Medford was too much for the Rams to handle at Gannon Municipal Golf Course. Gavin Collins, Alex Sullivan, and newcomer Johnny Doyle shot well for Classical, which returns to action Monday against Somerville.

Winthrop 38.5
Swampscott 33.5

Despite Swampscott’s Tyler Ostroff delivering a low-score 36 at Tedesco Country Club, the Vikings squeezed out a Northeastern Conference win. Mike Collins (38), Cole Manning (40), and Luke McGonagle (40) shot well for the Big Blue (1-2).

Louk Belghiti, Tomas Babine, and Joe Pumphret won matches for the Vikings.

Marblehead 57
Peabody 15

At The Meadow at Peabody, match winners for Marblehead (4-1) were Greyson Leventhal (medalist 36), Will Macrina, Joy Meshulam, Colby Moore, Dylan Whitman, and Teddy Dulac.

Tristan Joyce and Anthony Modugno won for the Tanners.
