MARBLEHEAD – In his superintendent’s report, John Robidoux highlighted how the first weeks of school have been going for the students and teachers of Marblehead.
He said that this year, 22 teachers have been hired in the Marblehead public schools, six of whom were working in the Marblehead school system in some capacity and have since moved to full-time teaching positions.
“I love to see that growth and that willingness to be a part of the Marblehead community,” Robidoux said.
He added that due to a “decent amount” of leaves of absence, there are a few long-term substitute teachers who have resumed their roles at the beginning of the school year.
Robidoux said there are three special education teacher vacancies. They have also hired a French teacher on short notice due to a previous teacher who “changed her mind” one day before the start of the school year and left before starting her position.
The new French teacher will start next week, Robidoux said.
“Overall, we are in really good shape. We are in a much better shape than we were last year,” he said.
The student representative, senior William Cruikshank, said “its been a good start to the school year.”
He added that he has noticed more new teachers this year including his band teacher as well as his sister’s English and Spanish teachers.
“But I’m loving band, and I have heard great things about the other classes and teachers,” Cruikshank said.
In regard to students, School Committee member Jenn Schaeffner said enrollment is down by approximately 170 students or just over 6%.
She said once the Finance Committee has enough members to meet, they will begin to discuss issues like enrollment.
