NAHANT — Community members are encouraged to partake in a public forum to discuss the planned Lynnway Multimodal Corridor Project run by the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) on Sept. 10 from 5-7:30 p.m. at North Shore Community College, room LE225.
Currently, the Lynnway is a six- or seven-lane thoroughfare and primarily a motor-vehicle route, creating challenges for pedestrians, cyclists, and bus riders. The ultimate goal is to establish a multimodal corridor that supports the long-term vision of a safer, more accessible city.
All the work for the project will be done in Lynn, however, the MBTA requested to hold a public meeting in Nahant as the Lynnway is the sole access to and from town at Nahant Beach Boulevard.
The MBTA is partnering with the City of Lynn, the State Department of Conservation and Recreation, and the State Department of Transportation (MassDOT), as part of the project. MBTA officials will be on hand to provide detailed information about the project, and address any questions or concerns residents may have.
Some of the other goals for the project include safer (and more frequent) pedestrian crossings, a calmer roadway, more efficient traffic signals, and safe bike connections to local and regional destinations, to meet Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Parkway Standards, the press release noted.
The MBTA initially received a $20 million federal grant for the project back in 2022.
