The Lynn Tech-KIPP Academy co-op boys cross country team (1-0) defeated Innovation Academy, 27-28, in Lynn Woods Wednesday. Credit the team’s depth, as Innovation secured the top two finishes.
Leading the co-op were Angel Rivera (3rd), Christian Nunez (4th), Robert Tewksbury (5th), Xavier Ortiz (6th), and Bryan Depaz (9th).
“This was a great test in the early season,” said coach John Hogan.
Despite the girls (0-1) falling, 21-34, in their opener, they were guided by Wilmarlyn Fernandez (3rd), Irene Delva (5th), Faith Akiabami (7th), Daisy Zarate (9th), and Emily Sodabahn (10th).
CROSS COUNTRY
The Peabody boys (2-0) escaped Marblehead, 27-29. The Tanners’ top finishers were Mohamed Lhassouani, Matt McCusker, Luke Murphy, Aidan Trainor, and Osama Mishal.
Marblehead’s Henrik Adams secured first place with a time of 16:51, outkicking the opposition through the final 200 meters. Will Cruikshank finished third for the Magicians (0-2), while Zach Pike battled through illness to finish fifth.
In girls action, Marblehead took down Peabody despite strong performances from Lily Murphy and Maya Sutton of the Tanners.
Lynnfield’s boys and girls teams dropped outings against Manchester-Essex, but not without positives. The boys were led by Nick DeGennaro (17:44 – 4th), Ritvik Mahajan (18:17 – 5th), Rowan Bayer (18:18 – 6th), Jason Tran (18:30 – 9th), and Andrei Pena (19:07 – 10th). Pacing the girls were Abby Lopez (19:44), Maeve Wertz (22:15), Sophie Kennison (23:38), and Afsana Rabbani (26:56).
“In addition, every other athlete ran a season PR (personal record) today,” said Lynnfield girls coach Liane Cook. “Great way to start the season.”

Peabody struggled for the first 20 minutes and fell into a 3-0 hole. Playing well for the Tanners were Jayden Lopez, Marshall Simpson, Thad Broughton, and Ethan Hartford.
“But, taking the positive, we played a scoreless second half and played as well as we’ve played all year,” said Peabody coach Stan McKeen. “A positive to build on.”

Behind a pair of goals from Greta Siefken and two more from Chloe Rogers and Julia Muser, Swampscott blanked Winthrop in enemy territory. Izzy Gold dished out two assists for the Big Blue, while Cecelia Tripp and Fiona Keaney also recorded helpers.
“Eve Byrne played most of the game in net and Easter Cunningham saw some minutes as well,” said Swampscott coach Jaymie Caponigro.

Saugus picked up its first win of the season with a dominant performance against Gloucester. Leading the Sachems were Shalyn Sewell (goal, 2 assists), Shawn Sewell (goal), and Sydney Deleidi (2 goals, assist).
“Selena Garcia, who is working her way back from knee surgery this summer, scored a PK after taking a hard foul,” said Saugus coach April Martinez. “Freshman Georgia (Condakes) scored a goal off a header. Senior Natalie Justice had one goal and two assists.”

In set scores of 25-10, 25-8, and 25-18, the Lady Rams (4-1) put on a show against Everett. Leading Classical were Brooke Braswell (6 kills, 2 aces, 11 digs, 4 blocks) and Emma Chevalier (11 assists, 5 aces, 8 digs).
“Brooke and Emma played like leaders,” said Classical coach Chris LeBlanc. “Neither had their best game, but when we needed a point, it was one of those two who delivered – exactly what you want from your senior captains.”
