SWAMPSCOTT — The Swampscott High football team overcame a double-digit halftime deficit at Blocksidge Field Friday to defeat Lynn English, 20-18, for its first victory of the season.

English, 0-2, jumped out to a 12-0 lead after two quarters on the strength of touchdown runs by Xavier Beauchamp of eight and three yards.

But in the second half, it was all Swampscott. In the third quarter, John von Barta hit Chase Groothius with a 9-yard pass, with Will Rose hitting the PAT (one of two) to make it 12-7. Noah Bascon ran one in from 35 yards out to put the Big Blue, 1-1, ahead 14-12.

Bascon scored again, this time on a pick-six from 33 yards out to give Swampscott a 20-12 lead before English quarterback Shane Knowlton-Simard scored on a 21-yard run with time running out.

English’s Nate Conde was injured with 6:25 left in the game and taken from the field by ambulance.
