LYNN – Lynn Public Schools has received funding from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education through the Hate Crimes Prevention Initiative. The $25,000 grant will be used to provide training for staff in restorative justice, which seeks to provide an alternative to traditional discipline through conflict resolution.
Assistant Directors of Social Emotional Learning Erin Heenan and Virginia Leigh wrote the grant application. Lynn was one of 38 districts to receive a total of $1,014,500 for the purpose of implementing anti-bias strategies and evidence-based practices for direct student support.
Heenan said LPS will contract with an outside organization to provide circle training, through which all parties involved in a conflict sit in a circle to work through issues, showing mutual respect. The goal is to come to an understanding while avoiding suspensions and decreasing violence in schools.
“We are pleased to receive this grant which will support our ongoing efforts to make our schools places where all students feel safe and welcome,” said Superintendent Dr. Evonne S. Alvarez.
This is the second year LPS has received this grant. Last year, the funding was used for a No Hate in School campaign, with training provided for teachers and students.
“Students and families shouldn’t have to worry about personal safety during the school day,” said Sen. Brendan Crighton. “Through this grant award, Lynn Public Schools will be able to expand on their efforts to ensure our educational environments are promoting conflict resolution practices that support overall well-being.”
State Rep. Dan Cahill said, “This funding is a meaningful investment in the safety and well-being of our students. I commend Lynn Public Schools for their continued leadership in fostering inclusive, respectful learning environments, and I’m proud to support efforts that prioritize restorative practices and conflict resolution in our schools.”
State Rep. Sean Reid said, “Hate of any kind has no place in our schools or our city. I am proud that the state is investing and supporting the efforts occurring in our communities.”
State Rep. Jenny Armini said, “Every student deserves to feel safe and respected at school. This grant will help Lynn Public Schools expand restorative practices that build community and resolve conflict in constructive ways.”
