GLOUCESTER — St. Mary’s football coach Sean Driscoll spoke highly of the Gloucester Fishermen before the two programs squared off Friday night.
“We have to keep our composure,” Driscoll said Wednesday afternoon. “I think Gloucester is back to what Gloucester used to be . . . in the ’90s and early 2000s. It’s a very physical program.”
In a meeting between 2-0 teams and St. Mary’s first road game of the season, the Spartans met their match in a 26-14 final.
“Tough night for the Spartans against a really good football team,” Driscoll said. “We didn’t come to play tonight and that’s on me.”
After blanking Swampscott (28-0 final) and KIPP Academy (34-0) in consecutive weeks, St. Mary’s dug itself into 14-0 (first quarter) and 20-7 (halftime) holes Friday.
“A bunch of penalties and turnovers led to two scores to start the game,” Driscoll said. “The second quarter was a little bit better.”
St. Mary’s Tyren Hoeun bolted for a 60-yard touchdown in the first half. Michael Sherman hauled in a 40-yard touchdown pass in the second half.
You could say the road doesn’t get any easier. St. Mary’s welcomes Catholic Central League foe Bishop Feehan to Manning Field next Friday at 4:30 p.m.
