Big Blue, big legacies in Swampscott

Zach Laird

September 21, 2025 by Zach Laird

SWAMPSCOTT — The Swampscott Athletic Hall of Fame committee announced its 2025 inductees, including the 2006 cross country team and other individuals who shined in sport. There was a banquet to honor their legacies and accomplishments, which took place Sept. 11 at Tedesco Country Club.

Kara Gilberg Teplow (‘10)

Gilberg, who played basketball and tennis, was a junior on the ‘08-09 state championship girls basketball team, for which she scored 22 points in the Eastern Massachusetts final at TD Garden. She also scored 16 points in the state championship game in Worcester.

A four-year starter on the tennis team, she earned Northeastern Conference, Daily Item, and Salem News All-Star honors. In 2010, she was named a Boston Herald All-Scholastic in tennis, as well as a Boston Globe All-Scholastic in basketball.

After graduating from Syracuse University in 2014, she carved out a career at Mintz Levin law firm, where she helped contribute to the business development, events, and marketing teams.

Lindsay Walsh (‘10)

Walsh was recognized for being a four-year letter winner in cross country, as well as indoor and outdoor track. She was captain of all three teams during her junior and senior years.

Walsh was an eight-time Northeastern Conference champion, three-time league MVP, four-time Eastern Massachusetts division state champion, and MIAA All-State runner-up in all three sports. She holds the SHS record in the 2-mile (11:02:00), 3,200m (10:54:11), and 4x800m relay (9:57:41). Walsh was Boston Herald All-Scholastic, Boston Globe All-Scholastic, Daily Item Runner of the Year, and 10-time Salem News All-Star in cross country, indoor and outdoor track.

After studying at Dartmouth College, she pursued medical studies at Brandeis University and received her Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the UMass Chan School of Medicine. She currently serves as the chief resident at the Harvard-affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency at Mass General Brigham.

Matthew Mahoney (‘14)

Mahoney set five school records across his three-sport track career at SHS. He established records in the indoor 2-mile, outdoor 2-mile, outdoor mile, outdoor distance medley, and on the home cross country course.

During his senior year, he was the MIAA Division 4 state champion in the indoor 2-mile. Mahoney finished second in the 2-mile in the outdoor state meet, and fifth in the 5,000m at New Balance Nationals.

He attended Brown University, where he was a four-year member of the cross country and track teams. After he finished college, he worked as a research assistant in the lab at Boston Children’s Hospital, and is currently in a Ph.D. program at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City.

Elizabeth Moran (‘04)

Moran, a four-year letter winner in girls basketball, scored more than 1,000 points, which helped earn her Northeastern Conference All-Star honors four years in a row. She also served as team captain.

As a tennis player, Moran was a four-year letter winner and conference All-Star. Her father, Larry, and uncle, Paul, are also inductees of the SHS Hall of Fame.

Once she graduated, she continued her studies at Boston University. During that period, she worked alongside family members at Cornwall’s Tavern. After graduating from Catherine Hinds Institute of Esthetics, she began her own makeup business, also working at a medical spa in Hingham.

Arthur O’Neil (Coach)

“Mr. O” was an advocate for every Swampscott athlete, having been involved in town sports since he arrived from East Boston in the 1970s.

He coached hundreds of youth members — including his sons — and in the 1980s, he and friend Jim Hughes collaborated to start the CYO girls basketball program after discovering there were no programs for girls in the sport. The program blossomed from its inception, becoming the feeder program for SHS teams.

O’Neil and co-coach Lou Holzman helped lead the girls varsity team to its first MIAA tournament appearance. O’Neil earned Northeastern Conference Coach of the Year honors.

He remained focused on Swampscott athletics for the rest of his career and continued to coach and be a positive presence for all athletes. He died Oct. 25, 2024 after a valiant fight against cancer.

Peter Hale (‘13)

Hale was a member of the cross country team that qualified for the All-Star meet during his junior year. His senior year, Hale won the Emerging Elite 2-mile race — both indoor and outdoor — and finished second in the All-State 2-mile in the spring.

During his time at Williams College, he was part of the cross country team that finished a close second in the NCAA Div. 3 meet, where he placed 16th as an individual, earning All-America honors. He was All-American four times throughout his college career.

Hale earned a Master’s degree in philosophy from the University of Cambridge, though he later switched gears to management consulting, which he still does in Boston.

Jeff January (‘90)

January was a standout athlete in football, basketball, and baseball. Captain of the varsity football team from ‘86-89, he set the record for most tackles in a game with 25 vs. Lynn English in 1989.

A first baseman and catcher, he batted .420 with eight home runs during his senior year. January was a scholarship player at the University of South Florida and UMass Amherst. He continued to play for the Boston Park League and North Shore Baseball League, where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame for both.

Rom Emmons (‘79)

Throughout his high school golf career, Emmons lost just one match, earning a record of 69-1-2 and capturing 70 of 72 possible points in interscholastic competition. He was a four-year player, three-year captain, and played on the first SHS golf team to qualify for the MIAA state tournament in 1978.

He was named Boston Globe All-Scholastic and Player of the Year in 1979. He won the North Atlantic Junior Championship in Bermuda and was the low qualifier in the USGA Junior Championship.

He graduated from the University of Georgia and worked in the healthcare industry for more than 20 years.

Brendan Garner (‘07)

Garner earned nine varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball. He’s also a five-time Northeastern Conference All-Star, and served as the captain for all three sports during his senior year.

He helped lead Swampscott sports teams to several MIAA tournament appearances and left a long-standing legacy of leadership and competitive spirit. After graduating high school, he attended Bowdoin College, majoring in government and continuing his athletic career. He captained the Polar Bears’ baseball team and earned All-Conference and All-New England honors.

He now works in AI and cloud technology, and lives on the South Shore with his wife and daughter, Hadley, named after the town’s elementary school that both her parents attended.

John Beaulieu (‘08)

Beaulieu balanced three sports: baseball, basketball and soccer. In basketball, he was a four-year letter winner, two-time Northeastern Conference All-Star, league MVP, and team captain.

On the soccer field, he was a four-year letter winner and, during his junior year, the Big Blue won the Northeastern Conference championship. He led the team in shutouts and goals scored as a senior.

As a pitcher/infielder, he was a two-year letter winner and Northeastern Conference All-Star during his senior year. Nine of the SHS teams he played for qualified for the state tournament.

He went on to play basketball at Taft School in Connecticut before playing at Kenyon College. He graduated from Syracuse University in 2017 and is an attorney at Siri and Glimstad LLP, helping people with vaccine injuries in the United States Court of Federal Claims.

Walter Costello (‘64)

Costello excelled in three sports and earned nine varsity letters across football, basketball, and track. He was commended not only for his skills as a wide receiver, but also for tackling and blocking, with former coach Stan Bondelevitch calling him “perhaps the toughest player.”

Costello was a three-year standout athlete on the track, where he excelled as a sprinter/jumper and helped lead as co-captain during his senior year. He earned MVP honors after finishing undefeated in hurdles.

While in college, he served as assistant football coach for Swampscott sports teams, and helped coach the track team while he was in law school. He volunteered to coach youth sports and as a member and chair of the Zoning Board of Appeals. He was elected President of the Essex County Bar Association and Massachusetts Academy of Trial Attorneys.

Members of the 2006 cross country team: Kaleb Allen, Sam Andler, Steve Bennett, Andy Cardinas, Casey Collins, Zach Cronin, Bill Duff, James Duffy, Charlie Emple, Ben Fagundo, Jordan Fine, Jake Fisher, Wes Geraci, Steve Hebert, Dave Herbert, Chris Heller, Jake Junda, James Keeter, Dan Kramer, Stephen Meager, Nicholas Moll, Keith Morgan, Dan Nellhaus, Sean Nimkar, Alex Panka, Dean Pasciutto, John Popeo, Austin Powell, brandon Poulin, Dan Rakos, Sam Rakos, Chris Sienicki, Zach Sinrich, Sierk Van der Berg, Kurt Yaeger, and Erich Yaeger.
