LYNN –– A new luxury apartment building in the South Harbor neighborhood called “The Shipwright” held its opening ceremony on Thursday.
Located on Hanson Street, The Shipwright overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and Nahant, and it also allows for direct access to Harbor Park. The units include ceiling-to-floor-windows, and the building has amenities such as a gym, a pool, a roof deck, a co-working space, and free beer for residents.
The project started construction in 2023, after developer McGrath Enterprises purchased the former site of the Lynnway Flea Market, which shut down in 2020 due to the pandemic.
Charlie Lodge, brand strategist at Proverb Agency, provided context regarding the building’s vision and connection to Lynn.
According to Lodge, the name “The Shipwright” was inspired by a shipbuilder duo named the Britt Brothers, who were very active in the Saugus river area in the early 20th century.
“We wanted to pay tribute to the legacy of the maritime history of the waterfront. The land itself has been more industrial in more recent history, so we went back a number of years to find a story that worked well for launching a new residence,” Lodge said.
He added, “Our partnership with the team has been streamlined because we knew what each other needed when it came to the story we wanted to tell. I’m really happy with how everything came together.”
Mayor Jared Nicholson weighed in on what the new apartment complex means for the City’s plans to redevelop the waterfront area.
“It’s an exciting step forward for the waterfront. We see so much potential for investment here that will benefit the city, and it’s exciting to see how this project turned out,” Nicholson said during The Shipwright’s opening ceremony.
The Shipwright currently has units available for lease, from studios to three bedrooms. It is managed by global real estate company Greystar.
