SAUGUS — Due to the government shutdown that occurred on Wednesday, multiple operations around the country have come to a sudden halt. The Saugus National Historic Site will be a part of this pause in operations.
If you’re looking for a tour of the different buildings, to take your dog on a walk around the grounds, or just want a place to sit and relax, you’ll have to find a new spot for now, as the gates of the park are closed until the shutdown ends.
The library, which hosts multiple events at the park, luckily shifts its programs indoors at the start of October. It only had to cancel one day of their Music and Mother Goose program.
However, there is one other event that the library hosts that could end up needing to be moved due to the shutdown.
“Our children’s Halloween Costume Parade is scheduled for Oct. 23 at the Iron Works, but we might be forced to try to find another outdoor venue due to the shutdown. We remain hopeful a compromise can be reached in Washington so that the Iron Works can be available,” Library Director Alan Thibeault said.
In addition, the Saugus Community Safety Fair has had to reschedule because the Iron Works will not be back open by the event date.
During the shutdown, certain services and obligations can continue. These include a response from law enforcement and EMS, fire suppression for active fires, emergency stabilization, or staffing commensurate with Preparedness Level conditions, protection of federal lands, buildings, waterways, equipment, and other property within the park, activities essential to ensure public health, and activities that ensure production of power and maintenance.
The National Park Service will continue to provide updates during the government shutdown, including critical information about park access, safety, and resources.
