ROUNDUP: Marblehead spikes its way past Salem

Despite being in enemy territory, the Marblehead volleyball team swept Salem in straight sets, 25-17, 25-12, 25-19.

Lila Moniz led the Magicians with 13 kills, followed by Mari Modrzynska (12) and Greta Sachs (10). Setter Eva Burke recorded 35 assists in the win.

Head coach Killeen Miller highlighted the play of Sydney Faris.

“[She] anchored the defense with a standout performance in serve receive, passing a 2.5 and adding 20 digs,” Miller said.

Marblehead improved to 9-2 overall and 6-0 in conference play.

VOLLEYBALL

St. Mary’s 3

Cathedral 0

Led by Abbey Sousa (4 aces, 4 kills, 13 service points), St. Mary’s took care of business on its home court. The win moves the Spartans to 7-6 on the season.

Lynn Classical 3

Everett 0

The Rams (12-2) earned a tough road win against Everett on Monday evening, sweeping the Crimson Tide 25-17, 28-26, 25-17.

Lynn Classical’s seniors led the way: Brooke Braswell (6 kills, 5 digs, 5 aces, block), Emma Chevalier (18 assists, 5 kills, 2 aces, 2 blocks) and Riley Bishop (5 kills, block, dig) helped keep the Rams unbeaten in conference play (9-0).

“We didn’t have our best effort tonight, but a lot of the credit for that goes to Everett. They played hard all night,” Classical head coach Chris LeBlanc said. “At the end of the night, we made a few more plays than they did.”

Masconomet 3

Peabody 0

The Chieftains topped the Tanners. Peabody fell to 8-5 on the season and will look to bounce back Wednesday when it hosts Marblehead at 5:30 p.m.

BOYS SOCCER

St. Mary’s 5

Arlington Catholic 1

St. Mary’s earned a conference win on the road. Ryan Buser scored a hat trick to lead the Spartans (5-3-2).

Swampscott 2

Peabody 1

Swampscott built a 2-0 lead and held on for the win. Peabody got on the board late in the second half when Thad Broughton fired in a shot over the goalkeeper.

Julio Cambui made 10 saves in net for the Tanners.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lynn Tech 4

Cathedral 0

The Tigers were too much for Cathedral, earning a big road win. Twenty minutes in, Emelyn Garcia opened the scoring for Lynn Tech.

In the second half, senior Angie Niz doubled the lead before sophomore Emily Zacarias made it 3-0. Garcia added her second goal in stoppage time.

Swampscott 4

Peabody 2

Greta Siefken led Swampscott with two goals and an assist in the Big Blue’s win over Peabody. Siefken opened the scoring, then converted a penalty for her second.

Lyla Rogers added a goal and an assist, while Chloe Rogers also scored. Eve Byrne made six saves in net.

Marblehead 8

Gloucester 0

The Magicians were firing on all cylinders Monday evening, scoring eight goals en route to victory.

Liv Carlson, Callie Gilmore and Alma Gaunt each scored twice. Cam O’Brien and Gaunt each netted their first career goals, while Isabel Mortensen earned her first assist.

Goalkeeper Hailey Gilmore played striker in the second half and scored her first goal on a penalty kick. Liv Niles also registered an assist.

Marblehead head coach Lisa Wales praised Gloucester’s keeper, who finished with 26 saves.

“Their keeper made 26 saves! She was incredible,” Wales said.

Danvers 4

Saugus 2

The Sachems found themselves down 2-0 early after the Falcons scored in the opening 30 seconds before doubling their lead a minute later from the penalty spot. 

Saugus battled back and got a goal back from Shawn Sewell assisted by her sister Shalyn Sewell. 

The Sachems trailed 1-2 at halftime. 

In the second half, Shalyn got on the scoresheet from a Shawn Sewell pass, but it wasn’t enough as Danvers scored two more times in the final 40 minutes to walk away with the win. 

“Overall the entire team played amazing,” Saugus head coach April Martinez said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the progress they are making.”

For Danvers, Emma Sutherland scored twice and senior DeAnna Figueiredo finished with three assists. 

FIELD HOCKEY

Malden Catholic 2

Bishop Fenwick 0

Despite a strong defensive showing, Bishop Fenwick couldn’t generate enough offense against Malden Catholic.

Mia Millett and Alex Kohalmi played well in the midfield, according to Fenwick head coach Marybeth Mahoney, who also praised defenders Bailey Chalmers and Ava Fillmore.

Sarah Bannister made 12 saves in net for the Crusaders. 

St. Mary’s 8

Revere 0

St. Mary’s continued its dominant season, recording another shutout to improve to 12-0-1. Cam Driscoll led the way with a hat trick.

GOLF

Saint John’s Shrewsbury 221

St. John’s Prep 224

The Eagles dropped their second match of the season in a narrow defeat Monday afternoon.

Junior Zach Enners led St. John’s Prep with a 34, followed by Jack Moriarty (37) and Cole Cullen, Jack Carew and AJ Bodnar (38).

Swampscott 47

Salem 25

Swampscott rolled past Salem, led by Tyler Ostroff and Sam Schepans, who each shot a 38. Mike Collins (39), Luke McGonagle (39) and Joe Dalelio (40) also contributed in the win.

Next up for Swampscott is a Northeastern Conference matchup with Saugus.

St. Mary’s 36

Malden Catholic 36

Despite a 7-2 match win from Matt Iannotti, St. Mary’s (5-7-1) settled for a tie with Malden Catholic.

Bobby MacAulay (5-4), Stephen Nason (5.5-3.5) and Lucas Downey (5.5-3.5) also earned victories for the Spartans.
