Roundup: No slowing down Skabeikis as St. Mary’s cruises

Well, the Sophie Skabeikis show continued at Manning Field Wednesday.

St. Mary’s goal-scoring star ripped another four goals as the girls soccer team defeated Arlington Catholic, 5-0, in Catholic Central League action.

McKenna O’Connell also scored for the Spartans, who upped their record to 7-3-2 and ranked No. 22 (74 teams) in the MIAA’s most recent Division 3 power rankings.

St. Mary’s returns to Manning Field Monday against Cardinal Spellman at 4 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

Beverly 2
Marblehead 1

Beverly scored on a PK with 12 minutes remaining. Marblehead (8-1-2) received its goal from Callie Gilmore with an assist coming from Liv Carlson.

“Senior captain Ashley Mortensen, junior Ainsley McDonald, senior Courtney Hitscherich, and senior Liv Carlson were outstanding today,” said coach Lisa Wales, whose Magicians received nine saves from netminder Hailey Gilmore. “Our team left it all out on the field. I couldn’t have asked for more.”

Swampscott 5
Gloucester 0

Swampscott (5-1-3) entered enemy territory and left with a dominant shutout win. Do-it-all Greta Siefken scored twice and dished out an assist. Also contributing were Jane Raymond (2 assists), Cecelia Tripp (goal, assist), Lyla Rogers (goal), and Jenny Sanchez (goal).

Bishop Feehan 3
Bishop Fenwick 0

Fenwick (4-4-2) dipped to .500 after a shutout loss in Attleborough. The Crusaders were ranked No. 23 (Div. 3) in the MIAA’s most recent power rankings.

Winthrop 6
Lynn Tech 1

Lynn Tech eighth grader Emelyn Garcia cut Winthrop’s 2-0 lead in half with a goal, but the Vikings scored the game’s next four goals. Tech, ranked 59th of 73 teams in the MIAA’s Division 4 power rankings, dropped to 6-7.

BOYS SOCCER

Marblehead 1

Despite a first-half goal from Marblehead’s Jared Halpern inside the box, Beverly tucked two goals in the second half to escape.

“My boys went toe-to-toe with the D1 powerhouse of our region,” said Marblehead coach Elmer Magaña. “They never gave up, and sacrificed body and soul. I’m extremely proud of their Herculean effort against the NEC (Northeastern Conference) champions. GK (goalkeeper) Matias Watts-Cruz made key saves to keep us in the game.”

Everett 0

No home field, no problem for Marblehead (6-4-2), which defeated Everett behind Sadie Beane’s second-quarter goal. Keliane Salem delivered the assist, while Elizabeth Hayes and Molly Beauchesne teamed up for goaltending duties.

“I want to highlight a tremendous effort on offense from Addie Rotigliano,” said Marblehead coach Ali Carey, whose Magicians compiled 11 shots on goal, “she was relentless in the scoring circle today.”

Lynnfield 3
Essex Tech 0

Grace Allen scored the first two goals of the game as Lynnfield (9-1-2) blanked host Essex Tech. Lauren Mattia and Nola Maney each recorded two assists, while Cameron Munion netted an unassisted goal. Bridget McGee faced one shot and collected her third shutout of the season. Lynnfield coach Kerri Doherty highlighted strong play from midfielder Allison Sweeney and defender Hayden Valiton.

Peabody 8
Malden 0

Senior Night was a good one for Peabody, which ripped eight goals despite a banged up roster. Rachley Blanco Lora scored her first varsity goal. Other contributing Tanners were Yashvi Patel (assist), Natalia Targett (assist), Karley O’Connor (goal), Kylee Bettencourt (2 goals), Elizabeth Moore (2 goals), Chris Troncoso (2 goals, 2 assists), and Sophia Kassis (2 saves).

VOLLEYBALL

Lynn Classical 3
Malden 0

The Lady Rams (13-2, 10-0 Greater Boston League) stayed perfect in-conference. Through dominant set scores of 25-13, 25-12, and 25-9, Classical was paced by Brooke Braswell (12 kills, 4 aces, 5 digs, 3 blocks), Emma Chevalier (19 assists, 5 aces, 4 digs, 3 kills, 2 blocks), and Sejla Iriskic (12 digs, 3 aces).

“This was an outstanding team effort tonight. Malden always plays us very tough and we just played very aggressive volleyball from the very beginning of the night,” said Classical coach Chris LeBlanc. “We also got a nice bump from Emma Pento – the only sophomore on the team – who got her first start and passed well all night. Our libero, Azriella Jorge, was also really good.”

Peabody 0

The visiting Magicians (10-2, 7-0 NEC) took down Peabody (8-6) in straight sets of 25-13, 25-15, and 25-22. Greta Sachs powered the Magicians’ offense with 14 kills, while Lila Moniz (11) and Mari Modrzynska (10) followed offensively. Setter Eva Burke paced the attack with 28 assists, while libero Sydney Faris anchored the defense with a 2.4 serve-receive rating and 22 digs.

Salem 2

Through set scores of 25-22, 25-18, 26-28, 23-25, and 15-11, the Big Blue avoided a late scare behind Lauren Paul (13 kills, 3 blocks, 2 digs) and Hayden Haskell (2 aces, 16 service points, 13 digs).

Swampscott 34.5

Despite solid shooting from Swampscott’s Tyler Ostroff (37), Luke McGonagle (37), Cole Manning (37), Sam Schepens (38), Mike Collins (39), Joe Dalelio (39), Sam Baron (39), Paul Calsimitto (39), and Jack Smyth (40), the Big Blue fell at Tedesco Country Club.

Marblehead 44
Winthrop 28

Greyson Leventhal (medalist 35) did his thing for Marblehead, which improved to 10-2-2 with a victory against the Vikings. Tyler Forbes, Max King, and Will Macrina all shot 36s.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Lynnfield girls defeated Amesbury, 25-31, as “everyone ran really well and ran personal bests,” according to coach Liane Cook. Abby Lopez won the race with a time of 19:28, while Maeve Wertz snagged third and Audrey Janielis (15th) ran a four-minute PR (personal record) with a time of 25:45. On the boys’ side, Lynnfield fell, 16-44, despite a fifth-place finish from Nick Degennaro (17:17).

The Marblehead boys (3-3) defeated Danvers, 17-43, behind Zach Pike’s first-place finish. He was followed by Will Cruikshank (2nd), Henrik Adams (3rd), and Filip Grubor (4th). The girls (6-0) clipped the Falcons, 23-34, as Marrietta O’Connell and Sarah Munroe finished 1-2 for the fifth consecutive meet.

Both Peabody teams defeated Salem by identical scores of 19-36. Winning the boys race was Matt McCusker, while CeCe Toda took first among girls to pace the Tanners.
