SAUGUS — Saugus’ girls soccer team (5-7) celebrated Senior Night in style against Salem Wednesday. After the four seniors heard their names called and walked across the turf with their families, the Sachems turned their attention to the Witches and earned a 6-1 win with all three senior outfield players scoring goals.
Seniors Shawn Sewell, Shalyn Sewell, Natalie Justice, and Peyton DiBiasio all played well, according to Saugus coach April Martinez. When asked about the Sewell twins and Justice all scoring on their night, Martinez couldn’t have been happier.
“Especially having both sisters get a goal,” Martinez said. “Natalie getting a goal from the corner was amazing.”
The Sachems found the scoreboard early thanks to two goals from Sydney Deleidi. Deleidi scored four minutes into the game when she followed up a saved shot and fired the ball into the net.
Just two minutes later, she doubled Saugus’ lead (2-0).
“Sydney had an amazing game – this was probably the best game she’s played,” Martinez said. “She was always in the right place at the right time as far as getting those two goals. She was reading the plays, reading the field, holding up the ball, and able to beat her girl. She was just playing smart.”
From there, Justice added her name to the scoresheet. Off a corner, she delivered the ball and it curled all the way into the bottom corner for an Olympico goal. Shawn Sewell made it 4-0 just before halftime when a corner kick fell to her feet and she rifled it home.
Salem’s Jacqueline Fritz scored in the second half – from the edge of the box – to cut the deficit to three (4-1).
However, Shawn Sewell added a fifth moments later before Shalyn Sewell found the top-right corner to make it 6-1.
Martinez said the team’s progress from the start of the season to now has been “night and day.
“We’ve been working really hard all season in practice — controlling the ball, moving it up the field, connecting passes, being patient, winning the 50/50s, and working hard off the ball,” she said. “At the beginning of the season, we couldn’t put more than two passes together.”
Although Justice and the Sewell sisters returned from last year’s team, most of last season’s roster was made up of seniors, making for a slow start this fall.
“They’re starting to click together and know how each one plays, and where they’d like the ball to be played,” Martinez said. “They’re learning from each other. We lost nine girls last year – seven of whom were starters. We have a whole new team that never played varsity before and hadn’t played together. They’re starting to click now and understand each other better.”
The Sachems look to carry their momentum into Friday’s home game against Beverly at 4:30 p.m.
