LYNN — If it isn’t broken, why fix it?
Lynn Tech didn’t pass the ball much Friday night, but it didn’t need to as the Tigers (3-1) pounced all over Lowell Catholic (1-3), 35-0, behind a strong running game and blistering defense.
Call it a successful Senior Night.
“It’s been five or six years since we’ve had Senior Nights here and had been victorious,” said Tech coach James Runner. “I’m just really proud of the guys for getting a win and letting their families see them play well. It makes me happy.”
Speaking of things that made Runner happy, look no further than Tech’s ground game. Colin McGough and Jacob Garcia found the end zone in the first half – one that ended with a 13-0 Tech lead.
From there, it was more of the same in the second half. Garcia, Eddie Lewis, and Jadiel Ortega scored rushing touchdowns from inside the 10-yard line.
“I’m really proud of my offensive and defensive lines,” Runner said. “We’ve got a double-headed monster in our backfield. Eddie and Jadiel are both excellent quarterbacks. I was also really proud of Jacob Garcia today – he ran the ball hard.
Shifty running back Anthony Brown didn’t find the promised land, but joined the fun with 20-, 11-, 43-, and 27-yard rushes.
“He’s just so tough. He literally has a no-fear mentality and so does his brother Tyler,” Runner said. “I’m just glad they’re Lynn Tech Tigers.”
Jacob Gonzales converted three of four extra-point attempts, freshman Traevon Bruton recovered a fumble, and both Joseandre DeJesus and Rafael Ortiz De La Rosa recorded a tackle-for-loss.
After a four-game homestand to start the season, Tech visits Monomoy High next Friday at 6:30 p.m.
The Tigers ranked No. 15 in the MIAA’s most recent Division 8 power rankings – two spots behind No. 13 KIPP Academy (2-3).
“What happened against Saugus (12-6 loss) shouldn’t have happened. I think we were a little complacent in that game,” Runner said, “but, sometimes, a loss can make you a better football team in the long run – that’s what happened tonight.”
