To the editor:
Thirteen years ago, a small group of friends decided to step up to help one of Lynn’s great resources, namely Flax Pond.
While the DPW and Parks Commission do a ton of work around the city, sometimes it takes a community group to fine tune the process. The Flax Pond Association has become one of those community groups.
We are a nonprofit that helps to oversee the health and welfare of Flax Pond by holding clean ups a few times per year, managing the waterfowl and the overall ecological balance of the pond. Flax is tested frequently in conjunction with the city to ensure the water quality is as safe as it can be to support the pond inhabitants and surrounding wildlife.
The association has nonprofit status, and members are asked to pay annual dues of $15, senior dues are $10 per year. While financial help goes along way, volunteering an hour or two per year goes even farther.
And throughout the years, people have stepped up to keep the pond looking good. But like any volunteer organization, new blood and fresh ideas are needed to keep it healthy.
This year, the association sponsored two cleanups at the Maple Street and Lake View Avenue sides of the pond and participated at two city-run cleanups on the Chestnut Street side of Flax. The association, with help from our elected officials who secured funding, is in the process of having a second fountain installed.
The annual meeting of the Flax Pond Association is scheduled for Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. at the St. Pius Parish Lower Church Hall (school side entrance) at 215 Maple St. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. For more information, email us at [email protected]. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram.
