After Rep. Seth Moulton announced he was challenging Senator Ed Markey in the Democratic State Primary, speculation has festered as to who will be looking to fill his current seat.
The election for the Massachusetts 6th Congressional District is slated for Nov. 3, 2026.
Lynn Mayor Jared C. Nicholson noted that he hasn’t yet made a decision on whether or not he will run to succeed Moulton.
State Senator Brendan Crighton said he’s not looking to run, and spoke with The Item to explain his position on the matter.
“After careful consideration, we made the decision as a family to not run for the sixth congressional seat. We really appreciate the outpour of support and everyone that reached out and encouraged me to run, but right now, my kids are very young, and I want to be around to enjoy all of it,” Crighton said.
Crighton continued, saying that he also loves the work he does every day in his current position. “I will keep my focus on the work at hand, and not run at this time,” he said.
While Lynn Personnel Director Drew Russo hasn’t made a decision yet, he said, “I’m humbled that people would mention me as a potential candidate.”
“I’ve been talking with friends and fellow activists around the district, and one thing is clear: we need a strong, capable Democrat that can win next November, and I’ll be out there working to make that happen, whether I’m on the ballot or not,” Russo said.
Former Lynn Mayor Tom McGee said he’s looking into possibly running to fill Moulton’s seat.
“I am definitely taking a look. A lot of people have reached out and talked with me about running in the race. … I’m taking a look at it and weighing my options as I go forward,” McGee said.
Moulton’s Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor Rick Jakious could not be reached for comment.
