Swampscott stays hot at home

October 17, 2025 by Joey Barrett

SWAMPSCOTT — Blocksidge Field has been a good place for Swampscott’s football team the last two weeks. Seven days after upsetting Gloucester, the Big Blue (4-2) took down Winthrop (1-5) in a 28-20 final Friday night.

With a scoreless first quarter in the books, Swampscott fired up its home crowd when Doyle Delano hauled in a short pass from John Von Barta and took it to the house (6-0).

From there, the Vikings scored the game’s next two touchdowns and looked to enter halftime with a 13-6 lead.

Not so fast.

Swampscott’s Will Bush rushed for a touchdown with six seconds remaining in the second quarter and the Big Blue snatched a one-point lead right back (14-13).

After neither side struck in the third quarter, Swampscott put the pressure on when Barta found Chase Groothuis for a screen pass. After catching the ball at the 30-yard line, Groothuis turned on the wheels and found the promised land through traffic.

Then came some insurance. Barta (3 TDs) spotted Delano for another score. Winthrop struck back with a touchdown, but it was too little, too late.

Swampscott visits Saugus next Friday with kickoff slated for 6:30 p.m.
