Saturday wasn’t just for college ball, as both the Lynn Classical and St. Mary’s football teams picked up important wins. The Rams took down Revere, 12-8, at Manning Field, while the Spartans won a hard-fought game, 24-22, against Saints John Neumann and Maria Goretti in South Philadelphia.
On Senior Day, Classical extended its winning streak to three games with a Greater Boston League triumph. The Rams (3-4) have outscored opponents, 51-38, the last three weeks.
“It was a great way to show out for our seniors and we’re happy for them. I thought, overall, we played really well this week,” said first-year Classical coach Brian Smith. “I thought the guys responded to a great week of practice and it showed on the field.”
After a scoreless first quarter, Classical’s Angel Ortega got things started with a 1-yard rushing touchdown in the second. The score remained 6-0 by halftime.
Add another rushing touchdown, this one from Dylan Hoeun, and Classical upped its lead to 12-0 in the third quarter.
Revere responded with a touchdown and two-point conversion, but Kalu Nasky snatched a big-time interception in the fourth quarter to help the Rams hold on.
Gianni McKay led Classical’s ground game with 102 yards rushing.
The Rams visit Somerville Friday at 6 p.m.
“It’s good that we’ve been able to put together a winning streak,” Smith said. “We lost a few games we probably shouldn’t have lost. To fight back and still have a chance to win the GBL says a lot about their character.”
As for Saturday’s South Philadelphia showdown, St. Mary’s upped its record to 4-3 after a nail-biter.
Tyren Hoeun, Michael Sherman, and Jimmy Jennings scored touchdowns, while kicker Ryan Esquival was key with three extra-point kicks and a field goal.
“Ryan’s 30-yard field goal in the first quarter put us up two scores and gave us an advantage,” said St. Mary’s coach Sean Driscoll.
In the fourth quarter, Sherman hauled in a tough catch on third-and-15 to help St. Mary’s run out the clock.
“Spectacular catch,” Driscoll said. “I think, at times, in the second half, we were on our heels a little bit.”
St. Mary’s enters a bye week before returning to the field Thursday, Oct. 30 at Old Rochester High with kickoff slated for 6 p.m.
“The trip was a huge success,” Driscoll said. “Our team got to spend a lot of time together and do some things they normally wouldn’t have been able to do.”
