To the editor:
This writer is in full agreement with the letters in the Oct. 15 Item regarding the resignation of Superintendent Alvarez.
What really needs to happen is a wholesale change on the School Committee, top to bottom! To the voters of Lynn, what you are seeing is a common practice of school committees who become “micromanagers” and seem to forget the real role of a school committee member.
Who suffers for this is the system, staff, and students. The real leadership of every well-run school system is a strong, future-thinking superintendent. Lynn has been fortunate to have these types of leaders. Voters, in the future, it is up to you to ask the candidates for School Committee: “Do you fully understand the role of a school committee member, and if elected, will you adhere to it?” Parents especially, you should be concerned at this high rate of superintendent turnover. Remember, it is your children’s educational future. This high rate of turn over is directly the School Committee’s fault, top to bottom! And it isn’t beneficial to the school system.
I also agree that, at this point in the school year, Lynn doesn’t need the “nationwide search” if there are well-qualified candidates within the system.
Also, don’t be fooled by those who might advocate for an appointed school committee. WRONG!! Think about it. An additional committee is done so by one person who then appoints the superintendent!!
Observe that picture. Voters should always have the right to elect their school committee, not the mayor!!
Voters of Lynn, my advice is to be careful and really observe what the school committee candidate’s platforms are. As a city, we need to continue making real progress for the future of students that the system is designed to serve. That is a major part of the overall foundation of any community.
Sincerely,
John S. Norton
Lynn
