LYNN — Former Lynn Mayor Thomas M. McGee has announced that he will not be running for Congressman Seth Moulton’s 6th Congressional District seat, opting instead to remain active in public discussions and Democratic causes outside of the race.
McGee, who served as Lynn’s mayor from 2018-2022 and previously represented the city in the state legislature, said he gave serious consideration to entering the race and spoke with many supporters before deciding the timing wasn’t right.
“I was not ready at this point to further explore a campaign and decided to step back from running,” McGee said. “Although I’ve decided not to run for the seat, I’ll continue to be involved, engaged, and a voice for a better future.”
McGee said he reflected deeply on the challenges facing the country and emphasized the importance of civic engagement and unity.
“At this point in time, in our country, we’re facing so many challenges,” he said. “It’s important for all of us to come together, get involved, and be part of the process.”
While stepping aside from a potential run, McGee reaffirmed his commitment to the Democratic Party and to advocating for working families across the district. He said he plans to stay active in political and community discussions leading up to the election.
McGee said, “I think it’s a real opportunity for all the candidates who are running — and those who may decide to start — to reflect on why they’re running.”
“It’s a big step to get into public service and try to shape a better future,” he said.
McGee added that he looks forward to hearing from the field of candidates as they outline their vision for the district and their plans to address key issues.
“I’ll be listening to all of the candidates — what they have to say, what their campaign is about, and how they plan to address the substantial issues we all face together,” he said. “We need to come together to work toward a better future.”
McGee concluded by thanking community members who encouraged him to consider the race.
“I want to thank everyone who reached out in support of me and the work I’ve done over the years,” he said. “I look forward to continuing to work together as we move forward.”
