MATTAPOISETT — St. Mary’s football team traveled to take on Old Rochester and returned to Lynn with a 14-0 win Thursday. The game was moved to earlier in the evening (5 p.m.) to combat the weather.
In a defensive battle, sometimes you need your stars to show up on offense. Such was the case for St. Mary’s and Rowan Merryman, who scored two rushing touchdowns to power the Spartans (5-3).
His first was a 20-yarder in the first half, and second from 18 yards out in the fourth quarter.
“We were fortunate to get some big run plays from Rowan Merryman, who really helped us out tonight,” said St. Mary’s coach Sean Driscoll. “You lean on the guys who will give you good ball security. … Rowan is a special player. When the money is on the line, he’s one of our guys we trust.”
When the rain started to come down in the second half, Driscoll knew it’d come down to defense.
“Defensively, it was one of the better games we’ve played. They did a nice job containing their guys,” he said. “What they do with their offense, we needed guys up front to step up and I think they did. Andrew Richmond had a great game up front. Nate Cutone and Matt Lule played really well defensively. Jack Hurley got two sacks for us tonight. It was a good high school football game – a physical game.”
The Spartans await Sunday’s MIAA bracket releases.
