The Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities announced construction upgrades are making progress throughout the state, with $555,492.17 being awarded to the Saugus Housing Authority for roof replacement. The Swampscott Housing Authority also received $133,214.65 for kitchen and bathroom renovations.
Authorized through the Affordable Homes Act and signed by Gov. Maura Healey, the initiative aims to help with upgrades to state-funded public housing throughout the Commonwealth.
State Sen. Brendan Crighton stressed the importance of supporting state-funded housing.
“Investing in our public housing authorities is important to make sure that their buildings are safe, comfortable, and meet the energy efficiency needs of current times,” Crighton said. “We’re proud to allocate funding to support these projects (and) appreciate the partnership of the Healey-Driscoll Administration to advocate for our public housing authorities.”
Rep. Jenny Armini noted that “these upgrades will make life safer for Swampscott residents.”
“They are not niceties. Outdated and broken appliances, utility connections, and dilapidated cabinets are accidents waiting to happen in kitchens and baths,” Armini said. “Prioritizing these vital living spaces is prioritizing community safety.”
For Saugus, Rep. Jessica Giannino expressed that the funding is vital to ensuring the “longevity and quality of public housing in our district.”
Giannino continued, saying that the Healey-Driscoll Administration has been a “strong partner to the 16th Suffolk, listening to our needs and delivering critical investments that help maintain and upgrade our public assets.”
“This funding is essential to upgrading and ensuring the safety of our state-funded public housing buildings… We must maintain these buildings to protect the well-being of residents who rely on them,” Rep. Donald Wong said.
Swampscott Housing Authority Chair Charlie Patsios expressed that “We’re certainly grateful for the amount we received so far, and while we’re optimistic, we need more funding to help support our seniors and residents.”
Saugus Housing Authority Chairman William B. Stewart could not be reached for comment.
