State supports Lynn school repair projects

LYNN — The Massachusetts School Building Authority has invited three Lynn Public Schools projects into its Accelerated Repair Program.

At the Ford Elementary School, all windows and exterior doors will be replaced, according to Michael Donovan, Director of Capital Projects for the City. The total cost for the project is estimated at $3 million, Donovan said.

The majority of the roof at Lynn Classical High School will be replaced. Approximately 15% of the roof was repaired three years ago due to numerous leaks. The remaining sections will be replaced as part of this project, at an estimated cost of $8 million.

At the Lynn Vocational Technical Institute main building, the boilers will be replaced with heat pumps as part of an effort to electrify the heating system. The City has received a $5 million grant from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and is applying for a $10 million grant from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources. Donovan said the total cost of the project is approximately $35 million.

“That is a forced hot water building, perfect to electrify,” Donovan said. “We’re getting ready to go green there, and every penny will help.”

The next step is for the city to partner with the MSBA on a Schematic Design Study. The MSBA will reimburse the city 80 percent of the cost of each project, Donovan said.

“We greatly appreciate the continued partnership with the MSBA,” Mayor Jared C. Nicholson said. “There is a significant need for new and rehabilitated buildings in our district and we want to explore all options for funding.”

“As we strive to create an inclusive and equitable learning environment for all students, the quality of our school buildings plays an important role in those efforts,” said Superintendent of Schools Molly Cohen. “We appreciate the support of the city and the MSBA in our efforts to upgrade our buildings.”
