LYNN — With plenty of food, laughs, and varsity jackets to go around, more than 100 people gathered at Knights of Columbus Tuesday afternoon for the 103rd Lynn High School Football Luncheon.
Hosted by The Rotary Club of Lynn, the annual event recognizes football captains, cheerleaders, band members, coaches, and staff members from the five Lynn high schools. It was sponsored by Brotherhood Credit Union, RiverWorks Credit Union, St. Jean’s Credit Union, and Metro Credit Union.
“We put on this event because we deeply care,” said state Rep. and Rotarian Sean Reid, who spearheaded the afternoon. “Lynn Rotary is one of the best ways to get involved. We’re just a group of people who like to get involved and have fun while doing it.”
After a blessing from Rev. Jason McCuish (The Swampscott Church of Spiritualism), Lynn Mayor Jared Nicholson spoke about “a whole team” coming together — both on and off the field.
“It’s so exciting to see you all before the big day. Thank you to all of the teachers, coaches, administrators, and especially the students,” he said. “We are so proud of you.”
State Sen. Brendan P. Crighton, a former captain at Lynn Classical, spoke about his football days. He recalled experiences such as taking the field for the Thanksgiving coin flip, leading team stretches, and attending luncheons such as Tuesday’s.
“One of the proudest moments I’ve ever had was being captain of the Lynn Classical football team,” Crighton said.
Superintendent of Lynn Public Schools Molly Cohen acknowledged the players. Through character and hard work, “You create memories for all of us.”
After some lunch, cake, and coffee, it was time for head coaches to take center stage. Lynn English’s Tyllor McDonald spoke about his strong connection with the other four coaches, while Jim Rabbitt represented KIPP Academy in just its ninth year as a football program.
“It’s been nine years for KIPP — not 103,” he said. “I really appreciate everyone here.”
Next up was St. Mary’s Sean Driscoll, who thanked the Rotary and added “Thanksgiving is a day of memories.” He was followed by first-year Lynn Classical coach Brian Smith.
“It’s great to be back,” said Smith, a former tight end, running back, linebacker, and defensive end who captained the Rams for two seasons. “These guys (players) bleed green and gold and it’s great to see events like this happen.”
Lynn Tech’s James Runner wrapped up the afternoon.
“This tradition is very important to me,” said Runner, who played at Lynn Classical and was an assistant coach at St. Mary’s. “I’ve had great times and involvement with every school in the City of Lynn.”
Also in attendance were Facilities Manager Rich Avery of Manning and Fraser Field, newly-elected School Committee member Tristan Smith, and former Item Sports Editor Steve Krause.
Thanksgiving football action kicks off Wednesday with Lynn Tech and KIPP Academy squaring off at 4 p.m. Lynn Classical and Lynn English battle Thursday at 10 a.m., while St. Mary’s visits Bishop Fenwick, also 10 a.m. on Thursday.
