Patriots’ Anfernee Jennings delivers in Lynn

LYNN — The Boys & Girls Club of Lynn welcomed New England Patriots linebacker Anfernee Jennings as part of its annual turkey drive Tuesday.

Jennings — in his fifth season with the Patriots — arrived in the morning, was given a tour of the facility, and took photos with kids and staff members before helping with preparations for the distribution. The turkeys were donated by Jeffrey Glassman Injury Lawyers.

“This stuff is super important — just being able to be a blessing. This is the type of stuff that I’m really interested in. I think the families that the turkeys are going to will benefit from it,” said Jennings, who has recorded a sack and seven tackles in nine games this season. “This type of event makes sure everyone will have enough food for the day.”

Boys & Girls Club Executive Director Brian Theirrien said the food drive plays a vital role for local families and the broader Lynn community.

“Any time that a community leader brings us an opportunity in which we’re going to be able to help families with a nice turkey basket . . . it’s a little more exciting when a Patriots player gets paired with that community leader,” Theirrien said. “It’s a special moment because at the end of the day, we have to make sure our families have a great Thanksgiving. To be able to offset some of the expenses for a nice dinner, it’s really nice when a community leader steps up and makes sure our families have what they need.”

Jennings said it “means a lot” for him to be involved in the community.

“Being able to be a role model to set a good example is important,” he said. “I don’t take this for granted.”

Theirrien said having a Patriots player participate doesn’t just energize the kids; it helps spread the word about the club’s mission.

“Any time you’re able to bring in a player of that stature, it brings awareness,” he said. “Our mission is always to help others, and for him to take time out of his schedule on his day off to make sure he’s present and able to help us get information out to the community is very important. It brings attention to our organization so others will be more apt to help out in any time of need.”

When asked about his favorite part of Thanksgiving, Jennings pointed to food. As for what’s on his plate, he didn’t hesitate.

“Mac and cheese, dressing, ham, turkey, greens, and banana pudding for dessert,” he said.

Theirrien said the club will distribute 70 turkey baskets.
