SAUGUS — The Saugus Police are seeking help as they investigate an assault that took place Monday night at the Square One Mall.
According to a statement put out by a department spokesperson, the incident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. Monday when police responded to a call from a woman who reported that she and three minor children were assaulted while in the Square One parking lot.
The woman and children had exited the mall and returned to their vehicle, only to find two young men inside.
The victim confronted the individuals, causing them to exit the vehicle. One of the men brandished a knife while the other punched an 11-year-old victim in the stomach. The two individuals then fled on foot toward the lower-level bus stop.
The victim reported that the two were laughing as they ran away.
Before contacting the police, the victim got into her vehicle and drove to an area where she felt safe.
The victim said there had been several bystanders who were in the area when the event occurred; however, after canvassing the area, police did not receive any additional information from witnesses.
According to the police statement, the two male suspects were described as 18-20 years old, wearing all black in color clothing, black beanie-style hats, and black masks.
Saugus Police Chief Michael Ricciardelli stated that “the department is investigating this matter fully and we are aware there are several witnesses who observed this serious act of violence occur. I make a plea to anyone who witnessed this incident to notify the Saugus Police Department and assist us in seeking justice for the victims.”
