MARBLEHEAD— One of the most anticipated events of the year in the coastal town of Marblehead is the beloved Marblehead Christmas Walk—an annual celebration that brings together families, local businesses, and holiday lovers from near and far. Complete with its hallmark parade, downtown festivities, and a much-awaited visit from Santa himself, the Christmas Walk continues to shine as a beloved community tradition filled with seasonal spirit.
Adding extra sparkle to this year’s celebration is a special Open House Jam at Johnny Ray’s Music Emporium, taking place on December 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. at 31 Atlantic Avenue, Marblehead. The event will showcase an accomplished group of performers, including Dave Mattacks, Mitch Levine, Dan Legere, and Dave Angilly, who will come together for an intimate and lively musical gathering. Enhancing the festive atmosphere, The Beacon Restaurant and Bar will provide snacks for all attendees.
Johnny Ray said the music store provides a casual, intimate setting that musicians are gravitating to.”
He added, “Improptu jam sessions break out all the time, that’s what sparked the idea for the Christmas walk jam!
“I was so glad Dave Mattacks and his friends were open to the idea,” Ray exclaimed.
Among this year’s featured performers is Dave Mattacks, a musician whose influence reaches far beyond Marblehead. Born in Edgware in 1948, Mattacks has been a driving force in rock and folk music for more than five decades. He is best known as the powerhouse drummer of Fairport Convention, where his dynamic playing helped define the sound of British folk rock. Over the years, he has appeared on many of the band’s most iconic albums, participated in reunion performances, and rejoined the group part-time in 2023.
Mattacks’ career extends well beyond Fairport Convention. His unmistakable drumming has appeared on recordings with Nick Drake, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Elton John, Brian Eno, Cat Stevens, Jethro Tull, Joan Armatrading, and countless others. Now based in Massachusetts, he continues to tour, produce, and collaborate with artists around the world, remaining an enduring source of inspiration across genres.
In addition to the live music, Johnny Ray’s Music Emporium will be in the midst of its Black Friday sale, offering 10% off all accessories, including amps, straps, strings, and more. It’s an ideal opportunity for musicians and holiday shoppers alike to pick up gifts or gear for the season.
With festive entertainment, world-class musicians, delicious local offerings, and holiday shopping all woven into one joyful afternoon, this year’s Marblehead Christmas Walk promises to be one of the most memorable yet. Mark your calendar—this is a holiday event you won’t want to miss.
