LYNN — Two veterans organizations each received a $10,000 donation Wednesday, funds raised at the fifth annual Freedom Fish event last summer.
Freedom Fish, co-sponsored by EDIC/Lynn and the Lynn Housing Authority & Neighborhood Development, provides veterans with a free day of fishing. This year, the use of 50 boats was donated by captains in the area, making it a memorable day for the 200 veterans who participated.
The Lynn Veterans Council and Disabled and Limbless Veterans, Inc. were the beneficiaries of the event.
“It’s one of our favorite days of the year,” said EDIC Executive Director James Cowdell. “It is so great to see the positive impact it has on veterans.”
The check presentations were held in the mayor’s office.
“We send a big thank you to EDIC for such a great effort in making this event possible and the housing authority for their support,” Mayor Jared C. Nicholson said. “This is a unique way to give back to veterans. We’re lucky to be on the water. It creates an opportunity to do something special. One of the best moments of the year is to see the excitement in the eyes of the veterans looking forward to getting on the boats.”
Cowdell said the idea for Freedom Fish was originally put forward by Ted Smith, an EDIC board member. The event has grown in popularity each year.
