LYNN — Lynn Disability Network is advocating for inclusive spaces by bringing sensory-friendly activities to local holiday celebrations.
LDN will have its fourth annual sensory Christmas Party on Dec. 19 at 5 p.m. The event will be held at Phoenix Food Hub at 8 Silsbee St., and admission is free.
The sensory-friendly activities will include a quiet sensory corner, fidgets, visual supports, a calming tent, sensory bins, and noise-canceling headphones. This year, LDN added more visuals, a bigger sensory space, and all-abilities cookie decorating.
According to LDN founder Louise Dominique, these activities were chosen to help kids who have autism and anxiety so they can feel safe and regulated.
“We wanted a holiday event where every child can celebrate with dignity. Kids can be themselves without pressure, and parents don’t have to apologize or worry about meltdowns,” Dominique said. “Parents feel relieved, supported, and grateful to have a judgment-free space.”
Dominique, who has a son with autism, explained what inspired LDN to host the sensory Christmas parties.
“Many families miss out on events because traditional spaces are overwhelming. Sensory-friendly events make inclusion possible. Inclusion should be normal, not special. These events help build a community where everyone belongs,” she said.
LDN expanded its inclusive mission to another holiday community gathering this month. This Saturday, the North Shore Juneteenth Association hosted a free, inclusive Santa event at the Church of God of Prophecy, where local children made crafts and snapped photos with Santa. There, LDN set up a sensory corner to support children who needed a quiet break.
LDN expressed its gratitude for the opportunity: “Thank you, North Shore Juneteenth Association Inc., for inviting the Lynn Disability Network to your beautiful Santa Christmas Party! We had so much joy setting up the sensory corner and watching every child smile, relax, and feel included. This is what community and love look like. We can’t wait to do it again!”
