Roundup: Marblehead captures Markowitz tournament

The Marblehead boys basketball team captured the Zach Markowitz Memorial championship on Saturday, defeating Salem Academy 72-40.

It was the fourth annual tournament hosted at Salem Academy. The Magicians got off to a fast start and didn’t look back en route to a 32-point win.

Tommy McGovern scored 15 points for Marblehead and was named to the All-Tournament team, while teammate Cameron Weaver scored nine points and was named tournament MVP. Finn Baron added 13 points, and Yamil Gil-Duran contributed 10.

Marblehead will travel to Beverly on Tuesday to face the Panthers.

BOYS HOCKEY

St. Mary’s 7

Westford Academy 1

The high-scoring Spartans improve to 2-0 on the season. Aiden St. Pierre scored two goals and provided an assist to fuel St. Mary’s. 

Geo Capo and Cole Alexander both registered their first goals for St. Mary’s in the win. 

Colton Carpenter (goal), JJ Avery (goal, 2 assists), Cam Marchand (goal, 2 assists), Kalen Huddle (2 assists), Caleb Racki (assist), Matthew Iannotti (assist), and Finn Racki (assist) all scored points. 

Winthrop 4

Marblehead 1

Playing in Lake Placid, New York, the Vikings got the better of Marblehead over the weekend. Dom Spinale scored two goals for Winthrop, while Joe Pumphret and Bert Kline each added one. Tomas Babine had two assists.

Marblehead’s lone goal came late in the third period when Drew DePhillips scored with 59 seconds left, assisted by JJ Downey.

Beverly 7

 Peabody-Saugus-Swampscott 3

The Panthers were led by captain Logan Bowen, who scored four goals and added an assist. Peabody-Saugus-Swampscott tied the game at 1 in the second period on a goal from Matvey Stupnikov. 

Stupnikov later added a second goal in the period to cut the deficit to 4-2 by the end of the third.

Jason Kelley scored on a power play from a John Morello assist to make it 4-3, but Beverly scored three more goals in the final 2:58 of the third period to secure the win.

Rockport 2

Bishop Fenwick 1

Bishop Fenwick lost its opening game of the season 2-1 against Rockport. The Crusaders will look to bounce back Wednesday when they travel to Bedford for a 3 p.m. game.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Auburn 6

Marblehead 0

Marblehead opened its season on the road Saturday with a 6-0 loss to Auburn.

WRESTLING

St. John’s Prep 40

Milford 27

St. John’s Prep defeated Milford on Saturday. Winning matches for St. John’s Prep were Colin Vitale, James Lally, Will Lavallee, Luke Calder, Charlie Poor, Sam Josey, Bryant Mason, and Jaxson Tammaro.

Saugus-Peabody

The Saugus-Peabody wrestling team finished second at the 2025 Glen Doherty Memorial Tournament with 179.5 points. Melrose won the tournament with 183.5 points.
