Family wishes for smiles

Sophia Harris

December 16, 2025 by Sophia Harris

Each year, Item Santa receives letters from parents doing everything they can to protect their children while navigating unimaginable circumstances. One mother, currently living in a shelter with her two young children, shared her hope for a Christmas that offers comfort after a period of upheaval.

She explained that the holiday season has been especially challenging this year as her family adjusts to a new environment after leaving a dangerous situation.

“This Christmas, being in a shelter has been difficult. Getting adjusted to a new area can be a lot at first. I came from a domestic violence situation with my children’s father, where we are now safe,” she wrote.

Her focus, however, remains firmly on her children. Her daughter will turn 7 just two days after Christmas, and her son is 4 years old. Small moments of happiness mean everything.

“My daughter is 7 on the 27th of December, which is two days after Christmas. My son is 4. I want the best for my kids. Seeing them smile is everything,” she wrote.

Even amid instability, she knows exactly what brings them joy.

“My daughter loves Hello Kitty, and my son loves Sonic,” she wrote.

Her letter is simple, but its message is powerful: Safety has been found, but healing takes time, and a few bright moments can make all the difference.

For families living in shelters or recovering from domestic violence, the holidays can be emotionally overwhelming. While physical safety may finally be secure, the stress of displacement, uncertainty, and limited resources often leaves little room for celebration.

Item Santa helps fill that gap, ensuring children who have already endured so much can still experience the magic of Christmas and the reassurance that their community cares.

Donations to Item Santa help families like this one provide smiles, comfort, and a sense of normalcy during a season when hope matters most.

A contribution to Item Santa can help ensure this family, and many others like them, have something to anticipate this holiday season. Every donation counts when it comes to making a meaningful impact at a time when so many families are struggling to make ends meet.

Now in its 59th year, the Item Santa Fund helps bring Christmas joy to local residents in need.

The Item collects donations while The Salvation Army purchases and distributes toys and essentials to approved families in the area.
