SAUGUS — For those making a New Year’s resolution to get a little more active in 2026, a great place to start could be Jan. 1 when Breakheart hosts its First Day Hike.
The hike will go from 10 a.m. to noon and will follow the paved path through the reservation.
This is the Department of Conservation and Recreation’s 35th year of First Day Hikes. The tradition started in Massachusetts in 1992 at Blue Hills Reservation in Milton before stretching across all 50 states when it was adopted by America’s State Parks in 2012.
“I encourage everyone to kick off MA250 on New Year’s Day with a First Day Hike at one of our incredible state parks,” Gov. Maura Healey said in a press release from the DCR. “This cherished tradition started right here in Massachusetts, bringing people of all ages and backgrounds together to take in fresh air and experience the beauty and rich history of our state.”
Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll said, “Each new year gives us the chance to honor traditions and embrace new opportunities. Whether you’ve participated before or are planning to for the first time, First Day Hikes are a wonderful way to wish each other a happy and healthy new year.”
She added, “Starting the year outdoors in one of our beautiful state parks is a great opportunity to connect with family and friends and inspire year-round outdoor recreation.”
It’s recommended that participants wear proper footwear, weather-appropriate attire, and bring water. I the case of rain, snow, or icy conditions it is advised that one contacts their local parks to confirm the hike has not been canceled.
Refreshments will be provided after the hike.
