Saugus Breakheart sets winter happenings

Elizabeth Della Piana

December 29, 2025 by Elizabeth Della Piana

SAUGUS — For those looking for some outdoor fun this winter, Breakheart Reservation has plenty of upcoming events that might catch your eye.

From December through February, people can take part in the Wild Breakheart Series at Camp Nihan at 131 Walnut St.

The January nature series will include Winter Tree ID where you’ll learn to identify trees when they have no leaves.

The February series is Animal Tracking where you’ll discover how tracks that animals leave behind can tell stories about what they do when no one is around.

On Thursdays Jan. 15, Jan. 29, Feb. 12, and Feb. 26, visitors can Step Into The Past and join a park interpreter to discover the parks history.

The hikes are approximately 2.5 miles, moderate difficulty, along rocky trails, with several stops.

The reservation notes that this is best for adults and older children with an interest in history. Weather can cause cancelation.

The program, which will meet at the Visitor Center at 177 Forest St., includes Stories in Stone and Glacial Giants.

Visitors can also meet outside the center on Jan. 8, Jan. 22, Feb. 5, and Feb. 19 to learn about beavers and their history in Breakheart.

Through December and February, on Fridays, the reservation will host the Kidleidoscope, which includes a story time and nature walk where a small craft will be completed. It’s appropriate for families with children ages 3 to 5.

Nice and Easy Hikes will be hosted Saturdays throughout January. You can meet up with a park interpreter at the Visitor Center for a moderately paced 2 to 3 mile walk over sometimes uneven and rocky terrain. It is best for ages 8 and up. Heavy rain and snow can cause cancelation.

Also visit the reservation on Feb. 7, Feb. 14, Feb. 21, and Feb. 28 from 10 to 11 a.m. for Fireside Chats, a series where someone from the Department of Conservation and Recreation will share their expertise and experiences.
