You know what I’ve been thinking? With the best of the best squaring off in the City of Lynn last weekend, one student-athlete shined the brightest.
St. Mary’s boys basketball team upped its record to 6-0 after capturing the Walter J. Boverini Basketball Tournament title at Lynn English. The Spartans, helmed by first-year coach Josh Keilty, defeated Lynn Classical and Lynn Tech en route to hoisting the trophy.
Jake Fortier, a sophomore guard standing at 6-0, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. After scoring 15 points against Classical, Fortier exploded for 26 more against Tech.
“Jake played great. Not only the points, but his defense, discipline, and decision-making,” Keilty said. “He’s gotten so much better in such a short period of time. We love coaching him and he’s such a hard worker.”
His prior week wasn’t too shabby, either. The confident sharpshooter netted 20 points against Bishop Feehan and 24 against Springfield Central.
Last season, as a freshman, Fortier was named Offensive Player of the Year in the Catholic Central League. He averaged 15 points, four assists, and two steals per game.
Jake, good week.
