SAUGUS — Breakheart Reservation was set to host its First Day Hike Thursday morning, but the event was canceled due to the icy weather conditions. One hiker who took to the trails that day ended up slipping and falling, leading to injury.
The Saugus Fire Department was called in for rescue in the area of Fox Run Trail between Pierce Lake and Silver Lake, where the hiker had sustained multiple fractures due to the severe icy conditions.
The hiker was deep in the woods, making it difficult to access him with the added obstacle of the snow.
The department pulled the hiker out of the woods using ropes and a Stokes basket. He was then transported to a local hospital to recover.
The rescue took around an hour to complete.
