Essential workers saluted with May Day car rally in Lynn

LYNN — Local labor and community organization members rallied Friday with a drive-by parade saluting essential workers and immigrants on the coronavirus front lines.

The parade saluted employees at Lynn Community Health Center, My Brother’s Table, City Hall, Salvation Army, Lynn Teachers Union, and area grocery stores, fire stations, post offices and the River Works.

“Workers in healthcare, first responders and grocery clerks are usually invisible and ignored. Today, the public understands that they are on the front lines, doing their jobs every day to keep us safe and fed,” said Maria Carrasco, New Lynn Coalition president.

Labor organizations traditionally observe May Day as a benchmark for recognizing workplace condition improvements.

Lynn United for Change members who participated in the parade said eviction and foreclosure moratoriums are important during coronavirus along with stimulus money aid and unemployment benefits for workers and their families.

“Saying ‘thank you’ is good, but we really need everyone to take another step and support our fight for safe and affordable homes for all,” said Lynn United for Change member Flerida De La Cruz.
