COVID-19 deaths climb in Lynn, but new reported cases decline

By Gayla Cawley | May 6, 2020

Four more Lynn residents have died from the coronavirus since Monday, which brings the city’s death toll to 67.

In that same 24-hour period, from Monday to Tuesday, there were 21 new cases reported in Lynn, according to city data.

Elsewhere, Nahant and Revere reported new cases.

Factoring in those who have recovered and died, Lynn has 2,423 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Although deaths have spiked in the past several days — 14 residents died over the weekend — the city has seen a steep reduction in the new cases that have been reported over that time period.

The day-to-day increase in cases has been on the decline since April 28. On that day, 98 new COVID-19 cases were reported, but the case count has gone down nearly every day, with the exception of Sunday, when 52 new cases were reported for a slight spike from the 33 that were reported a day earlier.

On Monday and Tuesday, the day-to-day increase dropped to 22 and 21 new cases respectively, which represents the lowest daily increases since April 5 when 20 new cases were reported.

The elderly continue to die at the highest rate, with 55 of the city’s 67 deaths consisting of residents between the ages of 65-104. Another four deaths have been residents aged 55-64, and no one under the age of 45 has died.

The majority of people infected have been between the ages of 21-61, accounting for 1,433 of the city’s cases. Fifty-eight children and babies between the ages 1-11 have contracted the virus, and 135 children and young adults, 11-21 years old, have been infected.

Nahant reported an additional case on Tuesday, which brings its caseload to 32. Lynnfield’s numbers remained the same, with 77 cases and 11 deaths.

As of Tuesday, Revere has reported 1,285 positive cases and 40 deaths from the virus.

Revere is continuing its efforts to provide face masks to residents as part of its Grab and Go #MaskUpMay campaign. Residents in need of a mask will be able to walk or drive up to Rumney Marsh Academy any weekday between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., for mask distribution.

On Sunday, the effort kicked off at Revere Beach, where 950 masks were distributed.

At press time, Marblehead, Peabody, Saugus and Swampscott had not updated their numbers.

As of Monday, Marblehead has 127 cases and eight deaths, Peabody has 758 cases and 83 deaths, Saugus has 336 cases and 16 deaths, and in Swampscott, 106 residents have been infected and seven have died.
