Coronavirus death toll up to 133 in Peabody

By Gayla Cawley | May 26, 2020

Four more Peabody residents have died from the coronavirus since Friday, which brings the city’s death toll to 133, according to Health Director Sharon Cameron.

Peabody’s number of virus fatalities significantly dwarfs other hard-hit cities, such as Lynn and Revere, which have reported 86 and 67 deaths as of last Friday.

Although deaths continue to rise steadily in Peabody, the city reported just seven new COVID-19 cases since Friday to bring its caseload to 966 — 402 residents have recovered, according to Cameron.

Peabody Mayor Edward A. Bettencourt has attributed the majority, or more than 80 percent, of the city’s COVID-19 deaths to residents living in nursing homes.

By comparison, Peabody and Revere have similar population sizes and Lynn has nearly twice as many residents.

Neither Lynn nor Revere updated their case and death counts on Monday. As of Friday, Lynn has 3,199 cases and in Revere, 1,534 residents have been infected.

Nahant has reported an additional case since Friday, which brings its caseload to 41. Six residents have died.

Lynnfield reported no change in its numbers, with 91 cases and 11 deaths. The town’s numbers have remained the same for the past week.

Perhaps due to the holiday, several other North Shore communities did not release updated numbers on Monday,

As of last week, Marblehead has 211 cases and 19 deaths, Saugus has 484 cases and 28 deaths, and in Swampscott, 119 residents have been infected and nine have died.
