LYNN — Four years ago, the Lynn Parks and Recreation Department introduced cross country to youngsters from Pre-K to fifth grade.
“We developed a course at Frey Park, which is run on grass with a nice assortment of challenging inclines,” said organizer Joe Abelon. “The course is lined and marked, with volunteers placed at various locations along the course to guide runners to the finish. Our intention is to introduce a lifelong, inexpensive, healthy activity.”
Two events – a short race of 0.86 miles and long race of 1.48 miles – are offered each day.
“We teach the young athletes how to run at a pace by which they can complete the course successively,” Abelon said. “The initial definition of success is to complete a race without walking. Historically, those who consistently participate in the program have had positive results.”
This is the second year Lynn elementary schools have had a cross country program. Last year, the schools were competitive in the Massachusetts Elementary School Cross Country Championships.
“They trained very hard to prepare,” Abelon said. “One key aspect of training for this sport is to understand the meaning of ‘racing’ pace. The program we offer is the opportunity for each runner to know their correct pace.”
There is no entry fee and all communities are invited.
